Complete instructional pathway for the MPS ABE Child Development Associate certificate by adding a Pre CDA/Internship class to the course offerings. Course would meet learning targets so learners would be prepared for the CDA class which is the next class in the pathway. / We currently have an English for Childcare and a Child Development Associate class however, there is quite a skill gap between the two courses. We will develop and run two 9-week Pre CDA/Internship sessions to complete the pathway. The classes would be scheduled for 16 hours per week and would include an internship in a child care setting with either a child care provider or our local early childhood education program’s sibling care room. We intend to serve 30 students total in the two sessions.The cost for this activity including instruction, prep and development is
22hrs x 18 wks x $40/hr=$15,840. (This also covers Activity 2-C!) / We ended up developing an 18-week (2-quarters), pre-CDA class that included 20 hours of instruction:10 hrs ofCore ELL, 10 hours of Pre-CDA. An internship of four hours a week was also part of the students’ schedules. 13 students enrolled in the first session and 11 students in the second session for a total of 24 students. Internships were through the childcare at our District’s teen mother program, the YWCA childcare and our own, Family Learning Child Care.

Increase hours that ABE teacher is in integrated into culinary classes at for “just in time” learning and offer tutoring hours for extra help. / We are working with MCTC as part of Fast TRAC to integrate an ABE teacher into the culinary classes to assist participants with math needed for successful completion of the culinary program. We would like to increase in-class time by four hours weekly for two semesters and offer two hours weekly of office time to work individually or in small group with students. We are not in control of how many students are enrolled at specific levels but we intend to work with a min. of 12 students each semester for a minimum of 24.
6 hours weekly for 36 weeks (2 semesters)at $40/hour=$8,640.00 / This class was unable to reach critical mass at MCTC so it was cancelled. We are considering investing these resources in an “English for Food Service” class as part of anServSafe/culinary career pathway. (Will need to revise the Next STEP plan.)
Activity 2 / 2-B(Please list the letter of the activity type – B, C, D, etc.)
Goal/Objective / Activities: Description and Estimated Cost
Develop a plan to coordinate adult education and employment training efforts in North Minneapolis that lead to college credit and industry certifications Ex: Serv Safe. / We will convene staff from the local Workforce Centers, CBOs preparing community members for employment, the community college and local employers to increase understanding of the career pathways that are available to the community. Example: the culinary pathway with ABE and MCTC and its potential in North Minneapolis as well as the health career core.
This would include a minimum of seven meetings to develop strategies, provide training to agency staff and convene employers to gather and disseminate information. The venues and size of meetings potentially could vary from small group as well as a community-wide event. Expenses include sub pay for any ABE/MCTC teachers/instructors present or for staff attending outside their work day (including CBO and staff from other ABE programs in the city staff);
Incl. materials/supplies for trainings and meetings. Estimate $10,740
TOTAL ESTIMATE OF ACTIVITIES: $55,000 / Our Adult Education Community Advisory Council is taking this initiative on as a project this year.
Our North Campus will be moving back to Broadway Avenue in August and in an effort to increase attendance on the first day, outreach staff have been meeting individually with various agencies on the North side. The meetings are not only to promote adult education, but to invite the agencies to use space in our new building to meet with clients who are attending classes at the North Campus.
Once we get settled we will identify agency employees who will participate in this Northside initiative.
