PE and Sport Funding

The New Primary School Sport Funding - £8000/year

St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School has always valued high quality PE provision but we are using the funding in the following ways:

Partnership with St Edmund Arrowsmith

We have paid for the support of Jim Keating from St Edmund Arrowsmith and the benefits of this will be the following:

  • Increased opportunities for professional development for staff resulting in improved PE provision and a wider range of PE activities for children
  • Increased opportunities for children to participate in competitions within schools and with other schools
  • The opportunity to develop leadership in young children by giving them training to lead games in the playground, so developing their confidence and positive relationships between the older and younger children

ABC Gymnastics

With the funding we have been able to welcome ABC Gymnastics into school on a weekly basis to work alongside teachers and pupils. This means the children have had:

  • Access to high quality PE provision developing gymnastic skills
  • A more structured approach to gymnastic lessons
  • An opportunity to further develop their gymnastic skills through extra-curricular activities

The staff have had:

  • The opportunity to observe good practice
  • Observe how skills are taught in a structured and progressive way

Val Sabin Publications

We have purchased the Val Sabin PE resources. These resources will:

  • Increase the standards in PE by using the follow on lesson plans in the file
  • Provide staff with support in all areas of PE
  • Increase the accuracy of PE assessment
  • Lead to high quality teaching and assessment in all areas of PE

Resources

We have purchased a number of items to enhance the quality of PE and Sport provision both within PE lessons and at lunchtime. These will:

  • Encourage children to be more physically active
  • Encourage competitive play through football, rugby and cricket.
  • Help to ensure high quality PE is being provided in the curriculum with appropriate resources

PE Apprentice

We have employed a PE apprentice to provide extra support and expertise in curriculum PE lessons throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. He will also provide extra-curricular clubs to increase the types of sports children are being offered. The benefits of this will be the following:

  • Extra support in PE lessons leading to improved PE provision and a wider range of PE activities for children
  • Increased opportunities for children to participate in competitions within schools and with other schools
  • Increased opportunities for children to take part in a wider range of extra-curriculum activities

Through the use of the funding we hope that the impact will be:

  • More opportunities for children to take part in physical activity and be fit
  • More opportunities for children to experience and enjoy competitive sport
  • Increased opportunities for children to learn about healthy lifestyles and the importance of this
  • Greater staff confidence in the teaching of PE
  • Increased levels of attainment within PE

The impact of this extra funding so far has been:

  • Increase in the number of A grades given on the school report for PE – 2012/13 – 59% A grades given and 2013/14 – 65% A grades given.
  • Staff training into Outstanding teaching of PE
  • More participation in intra and inter school competitions
  • Lunchtime rangers trained to help younger children participate in competition fairly
  • Higher levels of skills evident in Gymnastic assessment
  • Focused and progressive lessons being taught using Val Sabin lesson plans
  • PE apprentice has provided extra support in lessons and accurate assessments
  • More extra-curricular activities being offered to boys and girls across all year groups

During the 2014/15 academic year the participation numbers and success in competitions has had a massive increase thanks to the funding:

The Y6 Tag Rugby Team came 2nd, the Y4/5 Swimming team came 1st and will now go on to represent Wigan at the Greater Manchester Mini Games, 2 children qualified to represent Wigan at Greater Manchester Cross Country, we entered a Basketball competition this year which we haven’t done for a number of years, we had 3 teams and 12 individuals take part in the gymnastics competition – the Y1/2 and Y3/4 teams will now go on to represent Wigan at the Greater Manchester Mini Games as well as 3 individuals and the Girl’s Football team came 2nd in the competition. This success is due to the extra training which has been provided by employing a sports apprentice and Mr Keating thanks to the extra money. Staff are also gaining confidence with the teaching of Gymnastics thanks to the training being provided by Mrs Ascroft.

During the Spring Term we took part in a KS1 dance competition which we had never entered before, we took part in the Ashton Schools swimming gala and the boys team gained a bronze medal and a number of individuals won medals, Y5/6 Sportshall athletics competition – again this is a competition we haven’t entered before and the children did very well (5th out of 17 schools), the Y3,4 and 5 tag rugby teams made it to the semi-finals in their competition despite not competing in this before, the KS2 dance team won their competition and 19 pupils represented Wigan at the Greater Manchester Mini-Games, a number of who took medals home.

In the Summer Term we took part in Y5/6 Rounders, Y3/4 Rounders, Y6 Cricket, Y4/5 Cricket, Y2 Football and KS1 and KS2 Leigh School Games.

Overall this year we have taken 25 teams to a number of different competitions and many children won medals. They have all enjoyed representing our school and in the future we need to ensure this continues and the variety of sports increase. This is a significant increase from the academic year 2013/14 when we took 6 teams to competitions.
