St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin June 6th & 7th, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

THE NEW COVENANT

Perhaps this year we could refer to this feast day as “The Blood and Body of Christ,” since the readings we have today use the word “blood” so frequently—eight times to one use of the word “body.” The New Testament authors, when referring to the sacrificial aspect of Jesus’ death on the cross, never refer to him giving his body as a sacrifice for our salvation, but only speak of the shedding of his blood. In both Testaments, it is blood that is the primary source and sign of the covenant between God and people. In our day, while we speak quite a bit about the Mass as a sacrifice, it is a bit of an anomaly that we focus so much (almost exclusively, sometimes) on the symbol of the bread become Body rather than the wine become Blood to give the life of the New Covenant. Here, as in almost every part of life, we would benefit more from living in a “both/and” and not an “either/or” mode.

A BLOODLESS BODY?

We have been given a deep and rich pair of symbols to express the fullness of Jesus’ selfgift on the cross. In its celebration of the Eucharist, even when reception of Communion by all the faithful was infrequent and when the emphasis was on looking upon (called “ocular” communion) rather than receiving the elements, the Church has always preserved the duality of these symbols, since the sacrifice of Christ would not have been possible without both blood and body. So, too, is it for us who are sent from the eucharistic celebration. We are not merely “Christed” bodies in the world; we need to be the very Blood of Christ coursing through the veins of daily life at home, in the workplace, at school—wherever the Spirit leads us and guides us. As we pray “Lord, send your Spirit on these gifts,” we must also pray that the same Spirit is sent upon us through the thanksgiving of our Eucharist, so we may become Body—and Blood—for the life of the world.

Today’s Readings: Exodus 24:3–8; Psalm 116:12–13, 15–18; Hebrews 9:11–15; Mark 14:12–16, 22–26

Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Some of you probably remember the celebrations surrounding this very important feast of "Corpus Christi". The celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ is a proclamation of our Catholic teaching that The Lord Jesus gives us His body and blood in the bread and wine consecrated at our Mass. His 'real presence' in Holy Communion is a sharing in the Devine life and a constant reminder of the Lord's promise that He will be with us always. We know that when we pass a Catholic Church the Divine Presence is there just for us, in good times and bad because that is His promise. Just like the scripture reminds us some find this mystery too hard to believe and yet throughout the centuries The Lord renews the faithful who opens his heart to Him. For us who believe no proof is necessary for we know the power of the gift in our lives. Jesus say to us; "Come to me and I will give you rest". Let us never waver in our faith and if doubt should enter our minds and hearts let us go to Him and he will offer us that insight to recognize who it is we are privileged to hold in our hands and carry in our very bodies, becoming who we receive.

God bless and keep up the 'good' work.

Fr. Tully

Prayer for newly ordained Priest

Loving God, fill the hearts of your newly ordained priests with an abundance of grace and mercy, that they may minister always in the image of Jesus the Good Shepherd. This I pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gracious God,

So often you attempt to offer us a peaceful awareness of

your presence. It is always there, but often we do not slow down enough to become aware of it. Help us to slow down and appreciate the gift of your presence, and come to a deeper understanding of the movement of your Spirit in our lives. Help us recognize those moments when you rescued us, healed us, and reconciled us. Increase our trust in you, And show us how to reach beyond ourselves to minister to others, and be better

stewards and sacraments of your presence each day.

We pray this in Jesus’ name.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Weekend of June 6/7, 2015

Today’s Gospel gives St. Mark’s account of Jesus gathering his disciples for a last supper, revealing to them a new covenant established through his own sacrificial blood. Every time we participate in the Eucharist, we make a pledge to renew and deepen our participation in Christ’s covenant in practical ways. For the steward, that means making daily, personal sacrifices to strengthen this covenant relationship such as deepening our relationship with the Lord in prayer, supporting our parish, and giving comfort to the poor. Now is a good time to reflect on what we can do to strengthen our covenant with the Lord and our community in practical ways.

What is the Elephant in the room?

Our involvement or participation in Parish and Youth Ministry Events from our parish is lacking. We do a good job with things like, funeral dinners, Septemberfest and the Birthday Bash but, we need to know if there is anyone interested in leading other areas of our “Parish Life”. Do we think that there is someone else with more time to get involved? Let us thank the folks who make the time. What if we all decided to give a little of our time to make sure that our parish is still here 50 years from now. Do you even care? Our parish needs people with enthusiasm, people who want to make a difference in the lives of our parishioners & our community. We will meet once a month on the fourth Saturday, after the 5:30pm Mass beginning June 27th. Please mark your calendar and come help St. Michael be the best it can be.

Question of the Week

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: Jesus is our food for the journey.

Step 1: As you hear the story of the Lord’s Supper proclaimed today what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart?

Step two: Look into your Life.

Children: Who do you like receiving Holy Communion?

Youth &Adults: What does it mean for you that the bread and wine become Jesus’ Body and Blood during the liturgy of the Eucharist? What feelings or ideas does it surface?

A Message to Our Graduates.

Christian graduates, whatever you do in life, you’ve been formed into more than professionals. You’ve been formed into disciples of Jesus Christ. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. There is something you can give the world that ordinary graduates cannot. It’s something that 12 simple men brought to the world in 33 AD. As you go, you bring the light of Christ, the light of civilization, the light of human dignity, the light of hope.

Remember what your parents see and what God sees in you. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We need you to remind us who He is and who we are.

RCIA will begin in September “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is an adult convert program. If you know of any adults who might be considering becoming Catholic, invite them to our program. St. Michael and St. Francis work together with St. Paul and St. Joe Hill on the program. This is also a great opportunity for Catholic Adults (18years or older) to review their faith and/or to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. More information will be posted later.

The Eucharist and UnityImagine a person who receives Communion, accepts the Host when the priest says, "The Body of Christ," says "Amen," and then breaks off a piece, hands it back, and says, "Except this piece, Father!" This is what the person who rejects other people may as well do. In receiving Christ, we are to receive the whole Christ, in all his members, our brothers and sisters, whether convenient or inconvenient, wanted or unwanted, born or unborn.
