* The name Wayne is actually a spelling variation on one of the oldest

professions, that of a wheelwright, or " Wain " wright, as they were

called. They were also called Cartwrights (as in Bonanza, the TV show...),

from the Middle English word wain = cart, wagon (from Old English woegen ).

Sometimes Wain was a place name that described the man who lived at the

house that bore a sign of the astronomical constellation of the Plough,

which was known in medieval times as Charles' Wain (Charles being short

for Charlemagne)

-- but that was the exception to the naming rule. Variations include Wayne,

Wane, Waine, Waines, Wainman, Whenman, Wenman . In Germany, the man of

that profession was called Wegenmann .
