The Muriel Fung Student Appreciation Award
Established in 2001 by the Graduate Student Association, The Muriel Fung Student Appreciation Award recognizes graduate students who have made outstanding extra-curricular contributions to OISE.
In naming the awards after Muriel Fung, former doctoral candidate in Sociology and Equity Studies and former OISE Research Officer, the Graduate Student Association recognizes her heartfelt commitment to developing the OISE community and concern with justice issues both inside and outside of the institution. The qualities of service, leadership and generosity of spirit demonstrated by Muriel Fung during her years with OISE include acting as vice-president of the ISA (International Student Association) and as Trustee in CUPE 3907 for three years, representing students on the OISE computer committee, volunteering with Comparative, International and Developmental Education Centre (CIDEC), assisting many students and faculty in statistical analysis, coordinating events in SESE and being active in the former (OISE wide) AntiRacist Network. These qualities are reflected in the efforts of those students who will be chosen to receive this award.
Selection Criteria
• All members of the OISE university community, including students, faculty or staff, are welcome to submit nominations for the award. Recipients must be currently enrolled at the University of Toronto in either a full-time or part-time graduate capacity. Students may receive only one Muriel Fung Award.
• Initiative, leadership and involvement will be considered. The value of the student's contribution, rather than the office held, should be the major criterion considered.
• This year nominations will be forwarded in relation to student contributions made during the last academic year.
A nominee's contribution may take the form of any one, or a combination,
of the following:
- Improvement in the quality of life of students;
- Leadership on committees or influence on student or university affairs;
- Encouragement of fellow students to become involved in extra-curricular activities;
- Contribution to the sense of community at OISE.
Ineligible Students
GSA executives are ineligible for an award in the year that they hold an executive position. The Muriel Fung Student Appreciation Award Committee members are also ineligible for nomination.
Selection Process
The process of selecting recipients for the award will occur within OISE by
the Muriel Fung Award Committee, which is established at the beginning of each
academic year, and comprised of student representatives delegated by each
OISE department.
Award Value
The individual award value ranges from $200.00 to $300.00 but may change depending on the availability of additional funding from various OISE sources. The GSA has made a standing commitment to honour at least two students per year.
Awards Presentation
The nominations are open until Friday, March 19th, 2010. The Muriel Fung Student
Participation Award will be presented at Dean’s Graduate Student Research Conference on March 26 & 27, 2010.
