November 17, 2018

Communities In Schools (CIS) of the South Plains would like to invite you to support one of the most prolific one-day tournaments of its kind in this area! The8th Annual Peace.Love.Mud Volleyball Tournamentwill be held on Saturday, June 11th, 2016 at Buffalo Springs Lake! This down and dirty tidal wave of fun-in-the-sun featured 120 eight to twelve player co-ed teams and more than 1000 spectators in 2016! The tournament’s purpose is to serve as a platform to raise awareness about the issue of student dropout and the efforts of CIS to remove academic and non-academic barriers to education that often influence a student’s decision to leave school. The goal for 2016 is 180 teams and to raise $105,000 which will go towardssustaining current CIS programs and expanding to new districts across the South Plains region. The target goal of $105,000 will provide services to students across Regions 16 and 17. It costs $606 per student per year or roughly a $1.66 per student per day to provide the types of services to students that place them on paths of achievement and self-sufficiency. With your support of Mud Volleyball, you will make an immediate difference in the lives of more students in your region for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

Founded in 1999, CIS of the South Plains is the regional affiliate of CIS national. It is this agency’s objective to “empower students to achieve in life.” For fifteen years CIS of the South Plains has fulfilled this objective resulting in more than 28,000 students receiving life-altering services. The efforts of CIS making a difference in the lives of students and families is well-documented and plays out in 16 school districts and on 54campuses where CIS operates in the Lubbock, the greater Lubbock, and the rural communities. With the generous support of individuals and businesses, CIS will be able to broaden its reach to help even more students realize their potential and families gain their self-reliance.

Communities In Schools’ Formula for Success: The ‘Five Basics’

Communities In Schools believes that every child needs and deserves these “Five

Basics”:

  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A healthy start and a healthy future
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to peers and community

The Five Basics grew out of the organization’s collective experience during the first twodecades of its existence. Each Basic is critical to keeping students in school and helpingthem prepare for life. The Basics are, quite simply, what every parent wants for his orher own children.

The First Basic: A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.

In previous generations, a mother and father, living together, were expected to meettheir children’s need for caring relationships with adults. In many cases there was alsoan extended family and a religious community, both of which served as mediatingstructures and provided a safety net for children. But today, millions of young peopledon't have traditional families, and the mediating structures have weakened orcollapsed. It's up to the entire community to make sure these children have someonewho cares about them. CIS affiliates provide the first Basic by connecting students with

mentors (including family mentoring) and a wealth of community volunteers frombusinesses and faith-based institutions, among others. In addition, CIS staff oftenprovides key relationships for students. In the words of CIS founder Bill Milliken: “Programs don’t change kids – relationships do.”

The Second Basic: A safe place to learn and grow.

In today’s world, a child’s neighborhood is not necessarily a safe or nurturing place.Schools, too, are not always safe and secure. The extended family is much lesscommon, and youth do not feel that they're living in a community where they are knownand cared about. For many young people, it's much worse than that. They know they'reliving in a bad, unhealthy place: where violence, drugs, gangs, unemployment andmulti-generational poverty are commonplace. The school can and should be a safe placefor children, both physically and emotionally, and both during and outside of normalschool hours. CIS affiliates provide the second Basic by facilitating before- and afterschool programs, summer programs, gang intervention and prevention, violenceprevention and school safety programs, “safe streets” initiatives, and communityprograms during the evenings and on weekends. Moreover, research demonstrates thatCIS’ presence within a school will positively affect the entire school climate.

The Third Basic: A healthy start and a healthy future.

How can children concentrate on schoolwork if they’re hungry, cold or having troubleseeing the blackboard? Basic health and human services are essential for every child. When families are themselves in need (and often baffled about how to get assistancefrom the labyrinth of public agencies), it’s up to the community to step in. CIS affiliatesprovide the third Basic by connecting students and families with health care, vision anddental exams, child care, teen parenting resources, mental health services, substanceabuse prevention and intervention, sports and recreation programs, and much more.
