The Messages of “Lycurgus”

Now that you have read all of “Lycurgus” it is start to look at the big picture to get a better understanding of Spartan life. In order to do that you will be completing one of the two following tasks. You may choose which task you would prefer to complete.

Spartan Bumper Sticker / Spartan Comparisons
For this, you will be identifying a cause and creating a message that Spartans would feel strongly about sharing with their neighbors and the rest of Greece. This should relate to a social, political or militaristic element of life, should be easy to read and understand and should take a position on an issue of Spartan concern. / For this, you will write and illustrate a simile, metaphor or analogy about life in Sparta. Metaphor= a figure of speech that compares two things without using “like” or “as”. Simile= a figure of speech that compares two things using “like” or “as”. Analogy= a comparison of ideas or beliefs that are completely different, but that are alike in one important way.

Required for both options:

One the back you will write a paragraph explaining your idea and referencing “Lycurgus” to support your understanding of Sparta. This can be done with a paraphrase or a direct quotation, but cite the source as necessary. Remember to include the author, Plutarch, as well as the page number in any parenthetical citations.

These will be shared with your classmates tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 30.
