Dr Raymond Murphy, Dean of the IICN, will direct the 2014 IICN Neurology Update Meeting. The meeting will take place in the Merrion Room, RDS, Dublin on Friday October 3rd 2014.

The aim of this one day meeting, is to provide up-to-date information on neurological conditions, with emphasis on the latest treatments. The meeting is intended to be of interest to senior clinicians who manage neurological disease as part of their daily practice. The content will be appropriate for neurologists, neurosurgeons, general physicians, care of the elderly physicians, general practitioners and other disciplines, and for trainees in all of the above areas.

The Institute is pleased to welcome eminent speakers, each of whom is acknowledged as expert in their specialist area. The format of the meeting is designed to facilitate questions and discussion with delegates to the meeting.

Key note Lecture

The Key Note Lecture will be delivered by Professor Michael Farrell, Consultant Neuropathologist, Beaumont Hospital who will speak on “Neuropathology’s changing interface with neurology and neurosurgery over the last 30 years”.

Dr Farrell graduated from medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and interned at the Richmond Hospital.

Following completion of the MRCPI, Dr Farrell began his training in Pathology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin and later at the Westminster Hospital in London. Following completion of the MRCPath, Dr Farrell began a career in Neuropathology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada where he also undertook a fellowship in Neuroimmunology. Later, Dr Farrell succeeded Dr John Dinn and Professor Paddy Bofin as Neuropathologist to the Richmond Hospital, moving to the new Beaumont Hospital in 1987. Dr Farrell was appointed as the first Professor of Clinical Neurological Sciences at RCSI in 1996. Later, he became Dean of the Institute of Irish Clinical Neuroscience and was also Chairman of the Neuroscience Cogwheel at Beaumont Hospital. His interests include all aspects of clinical neuroscience but with particular interest in epilepsy and mitochondrial disease. He is a member of the American Association of Neuropathologists and the British Neuropathological Society as well as the International Society of Neuropathology.

Venue and Directions

Enter the RDS from the Merrion Road entrance. Access to the Merrion room is through the Members' entrance, to the right of the Main Hall.

Public Transport

The Merrion road entranct to the RDS is serviced by bus routes numbers: 27X, 4, 45, 4A, 5, 7, 7A, 8, 18

The closest DART (local Dublin Rail) station (approx. 5 minute walk) to the RDS is Sandymount.

From the Sandymount Dart Station: Follow the Exit signs and turn right onto Sandymount Avenue. Continue until you reach the traffic lights (Bewley’s Hotel and the Four Seasons Hotel will be directly in front of you). Turn right onto Merrion Road and the RDS Main Complex is situated on the left hand side (Merrion Road).

Car Parking

Car parking is available for delegates at the RDS at a charge of €6 per day. The car park is open from 07.30 – 18.00
