PTA General Meeting Minutes

October 20, 2017

Attendees: Linda Smith, Sherita Wilkins, Laura Monahan, Carolyn McCormick, Margie McGinnis, Rennea Butler, Denise Washington, Nikisha Diehl, Brian Tompkins, Jennifer Kassander, Eric Fritz, Jennifer Michael, Heather Ehrin, Mike Strange, Mary Zormemo

The meeting was called to order at 8:32 a.m.

Reading of the minutes - Jennifer Michaels motioned for approval of September 8, 2017; Nikisha Diehl 2nd that motion. All approved.

I. Report of Officers

A. Principal's Corner - (Asst Principals Nikisha Diehl and Eric Fritz in lieu of)

  • Asst Principal Diehl -
  • Discussed Girls Team program. Women aspiring in technology and entrepreneurship
  • Learning Locks - parents to attend an information session in January.
  • Asst Principal Fritz -
  • Advisory Programs
  • Student/Parent Survey
  • Making connections with staff members
  • Getting kids motivated.
  • During Face Time - put kids in personalized groups; develop relationships with teachers

B. President - Sherita Wilkins

  • Always looking for volunteers - if you have ideas bring them to the board
  • Food Rescue Program - Offered a refrigerator from Herndon High School.
  • Sensory Chairs - Approved last June. Kids love them. Will send email and pictures.
  • A parent recommended having the coding class design something to work with these chairs
  • Grants -
  • 10 chrome books for library; cost $2,000. Rennea Butler motioned to approve and Laura Monahan 2nd the motion. All approved.
  • Reading Lounge; cost $500. Carolyn McCormick motioned to approve and Laura Monahan 2nd the motion. All approved.
  • Study Island (help with everyday reading and SOL prep); cost $1,375 for license. Jennifer Michael motioned to approve and Denise Washington 2nd the motion. All approved.
  • 16 Keyboards for iPads (to support Language Arts classes); cost $762. Jennifer Kassander motioned to approve and Carolyn McCormick 2nd the motion. All approved.
  • Request for monthly breakfast for Student Ambassadors. PBIS event. Recommend the program leaders comeback with other ideas. One suggestion was to purchase shirts/vests; the Ambassadors would be more visible to parents.
  • PTA By-laws
  • Posted for 30 days for PTA members to review. By-laws to be approved at January PTA meeting
  • Librarian need help shelving books, etc.
  • Adding another show for Musical

C. Treasurer Report - Mike Strange

  • Income $4,171 - Spirit Wear and Musical
  • $32,801 balance
  • Submitted audit report.

II. Special Reports

A. MSAAC - No report

B. LEAP - Altoosa Reaser - No report

C. SEAC - Tina Ward & Margie McGinnis

  • Dyslexia intervention
  • Specialized reading at RBMS
  • Creating a SEAC flyer for posting on website
  • Use social media/ PTA to keep parents informed
  • Send info to Carolyn McCormick to share. Info should be shared with Case Managers
  • Dyslexia club - Mrs. Perrimenti is the facilitator
  • IEP Process
  • VCU Autism 3 year grant

III. Committees

A. Membership - As of October 20, 140 paid members. Need to promote membership.

B. Hospitality Committee - Dawn Renzoni

  • November 10 - Donuts with Dad

C. Spirit Wear - Leigh Pappalardo

  • Purchase items in bulk; cheaper
  • Have tables at Donuts with Dad, Book Fair

D. New Item - Heather Ehrin

  • Introduced Health and Wellness program for Staff.
  • Fresh Fruit Friday - have a smoothie/juice bar
  • Herndon Farmers Market donates fruit every Thursday at noon during fall season.
  • Need volunteers to pick up fruit.
  • Looking for other donations
  • Tina Ward and Mary Zormemo agreed to be the volunteers
