  • This book is about a girl named Fran who wants her flower to grow but is having a hard time figuring out how to make it grow.

SocioCultural: Students will be able to describe the importance of taking care of the environment and the earth. Students will discuss ways they can help take care of the environment (beginning as small as the school).

Readability Level: 1.8 Lexile 150

Before Reading: Ask the following questions to activate background knowledge:

  • Have you ever had to take care of a plant?
  • What did you have to do to take care of it?
  • What does cause and effect mean? (Cause is what leads up to something happen, and the effect is what actually happens)

During Reading:

Begin to read Grow Flower, Grow.Have students discuss with you what is going on in the story, and why Fran’s flower is not growing. Talk about the causes that are leading up to the effect of Fran’s flower not growing. Once Fran’s flower does grow, have students discuss the causes of Fran’s flower growing.

After Reading:

  1. The teacher will have premade sentence strips with the following written on them:
  • Fran gave the flower pizza.
  • Fran gave the flower a piece of cheeseburger.
  • Fran gave the flower juicy bones.
  • Fran gave the flower chocolate chip cookies.
  • Fran gave the flower strawberry ice cream.
  • Fran’s flower did not grow.
  • Fran’s flower got rained on.
  • Fran’s flower had wind blow on it.
  • Fran’s flower had sun shine on it.
  • Fran’s flower was outside and got air.
  • Fran’s flower grew.

2. Students will be given a sentence strip and will have to figure out if they are a cause or effect in the story, and then find the corresponding causes and effect.

3. Once students are in the correct groups, they will fill out a cause and effect graphic organizer for both effects-Fran’s flower growing, and Fran’s flower not growing.
