NONPF Leadership Mentoring Program

2016-2017

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (“NONPF”) will support a third cohort of the NONPF Leadership Mentoring Program for the period of November 2016 to November 2017. This one-year initiative, developed in 2014 by Dr. Deborah Barksdale,aims to provide a small cohort of new and emerging leadersin NP education with an opportunity for leadership development and mentoring. Each participant will receive leadership development, mentoring from successful nurse leaders, and peer support.

Project Description

The program will be overseen by Dr. Ellen Dawson and Dr. Kenya Beard. NONPF and the program leads will select a cohort of up to 8 NP faculty members to participate in the Leadership Mentoring Program. Interested faculty members are encouraged to apply to the 2016-17 program before September 15, 2016. The participants will examine critical issues that challenge leaders and engage in discussions that include

  • Serving on Boards
  • Writing for publications
  • Policy advocacy
  • Evaluating NP programs
  • Innovation and excellence
  • Leading with emotional intelligence
  • Coaching teams towards excellence
  • Leadership strengths assessment

The program will include 4 phases:

Phase 1An orientation to the program will begin onNovember 2016 in Crystal City, Virginia, in conjunction with the NONPF Special Topics Conference. Participants will discuss their personal goals for the program and mentors will be assigned.

Phase 2 will include a period of beginning work with mentors and participating in a series of Webinars. Webinar themes may include the following: 1) Leadership, 2) Leading Quality NP Programs, 3) Leading NP Curricular Innovations, 4) Budgeting & Program Finances, and 5) Establishing and Achieving Personal Goals. Nationally-recognized leaders will provide content for the Webinars.

Phase 3 will include thespring of 2017 through summer and early fall. Participants will meet for 1 day in April in advance of the 43rd Annual Meeting for leadership discussions with the project leads and other cohort participants. Participants will convene again in person in Washington, DC for a 2-day meeting in the summer. This meeting will include presentations by nurse leaders and others on topics such as policy, communications, leadership principles, personal development, business development, and more. Throughout this phase, participants will work closely with mentors and have periodic phone calls for leadership advice.

Phase 4 will consist of an evaluationof project goals and further leadership development at the 2017 NONPF Special Topics Conference in the DC/VA area.The cohorts typically plan to submit an abstract for the follow annual conference on some aspect of the program.

Costs

Participants (or their home institutions) will cover hotel and transportation expenses for participation in the NONPF 2016 Special Topics Conference (Nov. 17-19), a 2-day program meeting in Washington, DC in summer 2017, the NONPF 43rd Annual Meeting (April 19-23) in Washington, DC, and the NONPF 2017 Special Topics Conference in fall 2017.

NONPF will provide complimentary meeting registration for participants to the above-mentioned conferences. Should certain pre-conferences or additional registration sessions apply to leadership development, NONPF will also provide complimentary registration for participants to those sessions during the term of the program. NONPF will also provide publications and other leadership development resources to participants at no cost to participants. All meeting, webinar, and other program costs will be covered by NONPF.

Qualifications

An applicant must be a NP currently teaching in a NP program, either as a full or part-time faculty member.The applicant should have a minimum of 2years of teaching experience in a NP program and should maintain national certification as a NP.

NONPF will select participants with consideration of creating a mix of participants from a range of perspectives and backgrounds and who represent small, large, urban, and rural NP programs.

Application and Selection Process

Interested NP faculty members should submit the 1-page application with supporting documentation:

(1)Letter of interest detailing personal and/or professional goals that s/he would hope to address during the program and an explanation of how s/he could benefit from the program. The letter should not exceed 3 pages.

(2)Letter of support from the applicant’s home institution confirming a commitment to allowing the faculty member to participate and have time to complete the program activities, as well as agreement to cover the travel expenses for the three NONPF conferences described under “Costs.” The letter of support should be from the lead person for the NP program in which the applicant teaches and/or the program director or dean, if necessary for commitment of funding support.

(3)A current copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae.

NONPF must receive all application material by September 15.
