THE LADY BARR SMITH MEMORIAL FUND FOR CANCER RESEARCH
GUIDELINES
PURPOSE
The Lady Barr Smith Memorial Fund for Cancer Research financially supports Postgraduate research candidates with a top up scholarship or with a grant to support their research work.
ELIGIBILITY
Postgraduate research students from the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology in the Faculty of Sciences undertaking research in the causes, prevention, treatment and relief of cancer are eligible to apply.
Eligible candidates are invited to apply for the Lady Barr Smith Scholarship or Grant for Cancer Research. Candidates can choose to apply for a top up scholarship or a research grant to support their research candidature.
Applicants are expected to consult with their supervisor prior to submitting the application.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Lady Barr Smith Scholarship for Cancer Research: The scholarship will be paid to the value of $11,000 per year payable as fortnightly instalments.
Lady Barr Smith Grant for Cancer Research: The grant is to support the research work of a PhD student with the purchase of equipment, consumables, conference attendance or travel required for the research project. The value of a grant shall be up to $11,000 paid as a lump sum payment per year to the applicant’s relevant research project account.
The scholarship and grant are tenable for two years in the first instance. On application by a scholar, tenure of the scholarship may, on the recommendation of the Research Strategy Committee, be extended for a third year.
SELECTION CRITERIA
· Quality and feasibility of the research project
· Referee report from the supervisor
· Applicants curriculum vitae and academic performance
JUSTIFICATION
Supervisors are to provide written justification for their student nomination.
CONDITIONS
The successful applicant will acknowledge the funding and support provided by the Donor in all forms of publications and media promotions relating to the work conducted as part of the scholarship or grant.
HOW TO APPLY
Please complete the Lady Barr Smith Scholarship/Grant for Cancer Research Application Form, include a copy of your curriculum vitae, academic transcript and ensure that the name and signature of your Supervisor is included.
