The Bush Doctrine promulgated in the 2002 National Security Strategy will be reassessed by a new Commander in Chief in 2009. The enduring philosophical tension between idealist and realist approaches to protecting U.S. interests in a dangerous world often result in significant policy reversals following a change in administration.
