The HSC PDHPE Course consists of 2 Core strands and 2 Options. Each of these consists of a series of focus questions which helps to categorise the content and learning activities students are required to undertake. These are outlined below;

Core 1 – Health Priorities in Australia

·  How are priority issues for Australia identified?

·  What are the priority issues for improving Australia’s health?

·  What role do health care facilities and services play in achieving better health for all Australians?

·  What actions are needed to address Australia’s health priorities?

Core 2 – Factors Affecting performance?

·  How does training affect performance?

·  How can psychology affect performance?

·  How can nutritional and recovery strategies affect performance?

·  How does the acquisition of skill affect performance?

Students are required to study 2 options during the HSC Course. At Maitland High School Sports Medicine and Improving Performance are undertaken as the teaching staff have expertise in these areas and they provide students with the maximum opportunity to participate in practical experiences. The Options include;

·  How does sports medicine address the demands of specific athletes?

·  How is injury rehabilitation managed?

Option 4 – Improving Performance

·  How do athletes train for improved performance?

·  What are the planning considerations for improving performance?

·  What ethical issues are related to improving performance?

Option 5 – Equity and Health
