GURU NANAK SIKH ACADEMY

Teacher ofEnglish (two posts): MPS/UPS + Outer London Allowance

THE SCHOOL

Guru Nanak Academy is a co-educational Sikh school within the London Borough of Hillingdon. It was incorporated into the state system in 1999 as a voluntary aided Sikh secondary school, having previously been the secondary age element of a privately funded 5-18 college. The Academy is popular with parents and is heavily oversubscribed. Students attend from homes in Ealing, Hounslow and Slough as well as from its ‘home’ LA, Hillingdon. Academy status was achieved in November 2010.

Because of this popularity, the Academy has expanded from its original one form of entry to its present 6fe. Following completion of the third, and final, building phase in January 2011 the Academy is presently expanding to 6 forms of entry. In September 2013 the Academy will be 6fe in Years 7 – 9 and 4fe in Years 9 to 11. The present Sixth Form roll of c.100 will also see significant increase.

In September 2012 Guru Nanak Sikh Primary School, which shares the same site, merged with the Academy to form an all age (5-18) school.

In March 2008, the date of the most recent inspection of the secondary school, an Ofsted team judged the School’s work to be Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in every category – both in the 11-16 school and in the Sixth Form.

Earlier this year the Academy learnt that its application to become a Teaching School had been successful. It began this exciting new phase of its work in September 2013.

Guru Nanak Academy has a particularly high commitment to academic success and each year the School’s targets at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level are both challenging and ambitious. The GCSE 5+ A*-C pass rates since 2007 have been 100%. Extensive coverage has been given, in all forms of national and local media, to the School’s success.

The high level of students’ attainments at Key Stages 3 and 4 over the last five years can be regarded as even more impressive when due account is taken of the measured level of students’ ability upon entry to the school in Year 7. Cognitive abilities (CATs) tests administered each year during this period have shown the mean SAS for each year group to be either just above or just below 100.

At KS4 the Academy has a clear commitment to a curriculum of student entitlement to each of the main areas of educational experience. To that extent all students continue to follow full GCSE course both in French, Punjabi and Technology as well as making a course choice in the areas of the humanities and the arts.

Significant rebuilding has taken place over the last five years. A completely new three storey teaching block opened in September 2007. A new Sports Hall was completed in January 2008 with original school building refurbished in the summer of 2008. The final phase of the building programme has further extended facilities and includes a new Library and Resources Centre as well as Business Studies suite. As a result of all of this, the Academy’s teaching facilities are excellent across the curriculum.

In September 2013 the Academy was designated as a Teaching School. Partly in consequence of this, the induction programme offered to newly qualified teachers and the continuous professional development opportunities provided for all teaching staff are excellent.

Guru Nanak Academy is characterised by a combination of friendliness and hard work. Its staff are highly committed and themselves represent a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
