The Greatness Of Our Savior”

Hebrews 1

INTRO: God’s eternal purpose is to exalt His Son, the LORD Jesus, and bring glory

to Him. That is the highlight of the book of Hebrews, and it is the highlight

of all Scripture. Philippians 2:9-11 says, “Wherefore God also hath highly

exalted Him and given Him a name that is above every name: That at the

name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in

earth, and things under the earth: And that every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is LORD, to glory of God the Father.” Listen to what

other Bible scholars have said about the book of Hebrews: Oliver B.

Greene: The theme of Hebrews is the high priestly office and the supreme

Glory of Jesus Christ. M. R. DeHaan said, “The subject of the book is

Jesus Christ.” Herschel H. Hobbs said: “Hebrews gives to us one of the

Most exalted pictures of Christ to be found in the Bible.” William R.

Newell said: “The great object of Hebrews, then, is to set before believer’s

Eyes, Christ the Son of God.”

Hebrews is a plea to the new converts to press on to maturity in the Christ-

ian life. M.R. DeHaan said, “The very heart of the Book of Hebrews is a

solemn plea to believers to not be satisfied with mere salvation…We are not

to stand still and be merely satisfied with being saved from hell and headed

for heaven, but we are to become mature and fruitful in our Christian life.”

A Christian is truly maturing when he or she sees the greatness of Jesus, and

seeks to know Him to the fullest. Paul said in Philippians 3:10, “That I may

know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His

sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.” That should be the

desire to every born-again Believer, “That I may know Him…” The word

in the Greek Paul uses here for our word “know” means “to know by ex-

perience.” And this experience is a growing experience in which we learn

more of Him day by day as we walk with Him! I want to speak on this sub-

ject, “The Great Of Our Savior.”

(1)He Is The Son Of God

Hebrews 1:1-2—“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in

last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appoint-

ed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds”

A. He Is The Prophesied Son (v1). The Old Testament points forward to the

Son that was to come.

Genesis 3:15—“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy

seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Isaiah 7:14—“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall

conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Micah 5:2—“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands

of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me thatis to be ruler in

Israel; whose goings forth havebeen from of old, from everlasting.”

All the prophets told of Jesus. The risen Lord instructed the Emmaus

disciples in Luke 24:27—“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded

unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”

(2) He Is The Sovereign LORD

Hebrews 1:2—“…Whom He hath appointed heir of all things…”

A. He Is The “Heir of all things” (v2).

1. Every thing is under Him, nothing is above Him.

B. He Is The Creator Of The Universe (v2).

John 1:1-3—“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and

the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All

things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made

that was made.”

C. He Is The Upholder Of The Universe (v3).

Colossians 1:15-17—“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of

every creature: For by him were all things created, that are

in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible,

whether theybe thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or

powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And

he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

D. He Is Greater Than The Angels (vv. 4-7).

E. He Is Greater Than The Prophets (vv. 1-2).

F. All Of His Enemies Will One Day Bow And Call Him LORD (v13).

1. What a wonderful day when all the foes of Christianity will admit their

wrong and say to the LORD Jesus, “Thou art right and art to be praised.”

2. If you want a glimpse of what it is going to be like see Revelation 21:1-4.—

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were

passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,

coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I

heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he

will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and

be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no

more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former

things are passed away.”

3. The last enemy to lay down its crown to King Jesus will be death (1 Corin-

thians 15:26). Charles Spurgeon said, “If death is the last enemy, leave him

to last.”

(3) He Is Saviour Of Sinners

Hebrews 1:3—“…When He had by Himself purged our sins…”

A. He is the only One who could save sinners. Imperfect sinners require a

sinless Saviour.

  1. Like the song writer put it, “Thou must save and Thou alone.” There is no

Savior but Jesus Christ. (John 14:6)

2. One will not find salvation in any other (Acts 4:12).

B. He is seated at the right hand of God to intercede and receive all who

come to Him (Hebrews 7:25; 1 Timothy 2:4-6).

C. The redemption price has been paid in full. There is nothing else

required(John 19:30). The Greek word is tetelestai it is the victor’s cry.

During theGreek games when a runner crossed the finish line he would cry

out, tetelestai. No other price is required (Hebrews 9:22; 28; 10:9-10; 12, 14).

  1. Notice the past tense in verse 3, “purged our sins.” The word “purged” in the Greek means “to completely remove.” Our sins have been completely remov-

ed from us (Psalm 103:12).

1. In the Old Testament under the Old Covenant they could only say, “My

sins will be purged,” but in the New Testament under the New Covenant,

we can say, “My sins have be purged, they’re removed, they’re gone!”

(Hebrews 10:16-18) The hymn writer wrote: “You ask me why I’m happy,

so I’ll just tell you why, because my sins are gone. And when I meet the

scoffers who ask me where they are, I say my sins are gone. They’re under-

neath the blood on the Cross of Calvary, as far removed as darkness is

from dawn. In the sea of God’s forgetfulness, that’s good enough for me.

Praise God, my sins are gone!”

(4) He Is The Soon Coming King

Hebrews 1:12-13—“And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be

changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the

angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy

footstool?”

A. He Is Coming Again (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).

  1. He Is Coming Again Quickly (Revelation 22:12).

CLOSING: We see the greatness of our Savior in that: 1) He Is The Son Of God,

2)He is The Sovereign LORD, 3) He is The Saviour Of Sinners, and

3)He is The Soon Coming King! Who can compare to our Savior?

If Christians praised God more the world would doubt Him less.

Paul never said, “I know what I believe,” but, “I know whom I be-

lieve.”-C.R. Scoville What about you? Have you been awed by His

greatness? There is no one like unto Him! Isaiah 45:21, “…There is

no God else beside Me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside Me.”
