Job Description

Job Title: Male* Youth and Children’s Worker (full time 40 hours/week)

(*The local population is pre-dominantly Bangladeshi Muslim. The work includes personal mentoring of teenage boys and the provision of support over educational and welfare matters to boys, some of whom will be Bangladeshi boys from Muslim families. A male worker is therefore required.)

Responsible to: Outreach Manager

Main purposes of job:

Within the overall direction set by The Good Shepherd Mission’s leadership: -

  • To oversee The Good Shepherd Mission’s local outreach work with children in school years 3-6 and their families, including children from the majority Bangladeshi Muslim community.
  • To support the existing Youth Worker in discipling young people in school years 7-12.
  • To support the development of The Good Shepherd Mission’s local outreach work to youth and children.

Each of these areas entails sharing the good news of Jesus by teaching and example, and developing opportunities for youth and children to respond and grow in understanding and faith in Christ.

Principal duties:

Children

  1. To oversee the weekly children’s club (school years 3-6), including planning termly programmes of activities and teaching.
  1. To assist with the recruitment of volunteer children’s workers to the volunteer team which helps run the club; to supervise and support the volunteers, including leading regular team review and planning meetings.
  1. To liaise with the Primary Family Support Worker in seeking opportunities for developing contacts with families of children attending the club, and for facilitating activities involving parents.
  1. To liaise with the existing Youth Worker to ensure co-ordination between activities, and with other Mission workers as appropriate.
  1. To plan and lead holiday activities for children attending the children’s club.
  1. To develop links with local primary schools.

Youth

  1. With the existing Youth Worker to support the existing Sunday morning group for young people in school years 7-12 from families in The Good Shepherd Mission church fellowship.
  1. With the existing Youth Worker to review the provision within the church fellowship for young people in school years 7-12 and to put in place structures to disciple the young people (for example a week night youth discipleship group).
  1. With the existing Youth Worker, to explore re-establishing club based youth work with (predominantly Bangladeshi Muslim) boys in school years 7-12.
  1. To support the existing Youth Worker in the development of detached youth work.

Training and Networking

  1. To undertake training agreed with the Outreach Manager that is relevant to the job for up to 2 weeks per year.
  1. With the existing Youth Worker, to provide training for all children’s and youth work volunteers.
  1. To network with other youth and children’s workers and organisations in order to facilitate the development of The Good Shepherd Mission’s work with youth and children

Management and Administration

  1. To meet with the Outreach Manager at least once every fortnight to review and plan work.
  1. To liaise with the existing Youth Worker to ensure coordination between activities, and with other Mission workers as appropriate.
  1. To keep appropriate work records and write regular summary reports/proposals as required for the leadership team and external funders.
  1. Share information about the work with The Good Shepherd Mission church fellowship on a regular basis at prayer meetings and on Sunday mornings, and where appropriate, help to recruit and support church members to serve as volunteers in the work.

Hours

40 hours a week, including working some hours on Sundays, and up to four evenings a week (the children’s club is currently on Thursday evenings).

Pay

Full-time salary 2010-11 £22,425
