Example Essay

Prof. Tim Clark

The Good, Bad, and Ugly Sides of Alcohol

(CENTERED TITLE GOES HERE)

NOTE: For this assignment, I want anExample-type Essay of appropriate length. The purpose of an Example essay is to prove something by giving examples. It should have one or more quotes of some sort in it, with correctreferences given. Either use my quote from Brad Paisley below, and/or a differentquote from the same song, or find another quote somewhere else, but make sure the source is citedin the essay at the end of the quote, and then list the details in the Work Citedor Works Citedat the end of the essay. (For ENGL-1010 students, this part is worth one letter grade, so make sure it is correct; however, DSPW-0800 students can skip it.) This essay will be marked, graded, and returned to be revised.

(Introduction Paragraph) Start the paragraph with some basic background information about the topic (in this case, the history of alcohol use). Also, put in some sort of thesis statement that says what you are trying to prove in the essay. Next, set up a statement that maps outthe pattern of what you plan to explain in the essay, and in the order of how you intend to explain it. Last, give some sort of transitional statement that leads into the body paragraphs. Here are some possible example statements for the Introduction Paragraph that can be changed or adapted (please do not plagiarize my example):

Alcohol and its physiological effects have been known to humans for thousands of years. Brad Paisley’s humorous song “Alcohol”states that this substance is both “medicine and poison” (Paisley). Throughout the centuries, alcohol has caused many unusual incidents and memories. Some effectswere good, many were bad, and a few were ugly and strange. The following paragraphs give examples of alcohol’s effects.

The first body paragraphshould give someexamples of alcohol’s good effects. Students can check Google.com for “good effects of alcohol” to find some of thewell-known effects, such as its antiseptic effects, tranquilizer effects, positive health benefits of red wine and/or positive medical benefits of one drink of alcohol, etc.

First are some examples of the good effects of alcohol.

The second body paragraph should giveexamples of alcohol’s bad effects. Manywell-known examples can also be obtained from the Internet. Students should have no difficulty finding plenty of examples for the bad effects of drinking alcohol.

Second are some examples of the bad effects of alcohol.

The third body paragraphshould give examples of alcohol’s ugly and totally strange effects. Students can interview friends and/or relatives to find some weird, true stories for these examples (names can be changed to protect the guilty or innocent). For example, there are many interesting true examplesof alcoholics’ hallucinations while having the DT’s (Delirium Tremens, look it up if you do not know what it means). Or, perhaps someone could give true examples of the results of what happens when people wake up sober after drinking too much the night before. Other possible sources for examples oftrue stories are publications or websites connected with the organizationnamed Alcoholics Anonymous. If you use a quote, be sure to cite the source after the quote and put details in Works Cited.

Third are some examples of the uglyand strange effects of alcohol.

The conclusion paragraphshould sum up what you are trying to prove, should wrap up the essay, and can make some sort of “moral of the story” statement.

In conclusion, etc.
