Week 4 - 9th November 2005

1.  Revision

Cropping, rotating, zooming, erasing.
Setting tool options, Using the Clone tool
Resizing, compressing, sending email images.
Using “Word” to prepare for printing.
Other options for printing: Boots or Tesco.
100 photos 6 x 4 for £7 - £10. (or 15p for 1) / 4.  Storing information with a photograph
Open the cropped image of the herring gull that you made in Week 1, or another small image.
Note its name and where it is filed.
Hold down the windows key and press letter “e”.
Navigate to gull100.jpg or your small image, and right click it. Select Properties > Summary
Type some information into the boxes.
Click OK to save the information with the image.
2. Managing Colour (See handout on Colour)
a) Open BattCott.jpg from Week 3 in Gimp05
Select: Tools> Colour Tools > Colour Balance
Try pushing the red slider up to 66, for a red glow.
Experiment with the other sliders. Save if you wish.
b) Open BankH.jpg from Week 3 in Gimp05
Select: Tools > Colour Tools > Hue – Saturation
Click on the Master rectangle in the centre.
Slide the Hue slider left, towards the red end.
Now push it right to the blue end. Experiment.
c)  Open Boats.jpg from week 1 in Gimp05
Select: Tools > Colour Tools > Colourise
Note that the image is now grey, (greyscale).
Try moving the sliders to see the effects.
This tool gives the effect of looking at the image through coloured glass. / 5. Adding text to an Image
Open an Image that you think needs some annotation. For example Cov1904.jpg from Week 2.
Select the Text tool from the Main toolbox. T
Set the font size and colour in the options box.
Now click on your image to open the text editor.
Type the words you wish to show.
Close the text editor when you have finished.
Gimp will make a new layer for the words, so now your image will have two layers.
To move the words select the Move tool.
Hover until a hand appears, then drag the word(s).
By selecting the text layer in the Layers dialogue box you can change text colour, font or size, by changing the tool options settings.
Save your new image.
You will be asked to “Export” the image to merge the layers.

Use Google: enter subject, select “Images”
