My own Culture

I was born in Hohenmölsen, a small town in Sachsen-Anhalt. Sachsen-Anhalt is one of the 16 German federal states and is located in the east of Germany. My parents also were born there. When I was 2 years old we went to Hessen which is located in the south of Germany.

The German School system

In Germany, most children between the ages of 5 and 7 come to school.

Primary school: At the beginning of compulsory schooling, students attend elementary school, which is usually attended to in the morning. In most of the countries grades are already given here, but in some cases the pupils receive only first grades and only in the 4th grade the first real grades.

Secondary level I: All types of school from grade 5 up to grade 10 fall into this category. These include primary and secondary schools, grammar schools, secondary schools as well as general schools. Depending on the type of school, the pupils can leave the sec. I after the 9th or 10th grade.

Secondary level II: This includes the attendance of the grammar school, which ends with the Abitur. So far this has lasted from class 11 to class 13. However, in many of the federal states, the conversion to the Abitur in class 12 has already been carried out. By the year 2016, all upper secondary schools will be converted nationwide. Sec. II can also be completed with theUniversity entrance qualification (according to class 12 or class 11).

Second educational path: This area includes evening schools and colleges, where school degrees such as theGraduate degree, but also the Abitur can be taken up.

Sports

One of the most popular sports of the Germans is football. The national team is reigning world champion and is one of the most successful national teams worldwide. She has been a four-time world champion (1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014) as well as three times European champions (1972, 1980 and 1996), numerous semi-final and final participations at world and European Championships.

Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest in Munich is the largest folk festival in the world. Since 1810 it is held on the Theresienwiese in the Bavarian state capital Munich. For the Oktoberfest some Munich breweries brew a special beer, which must have a master wort of at least 13.5%. The Oktoberfest generates an average of one billion euros in sales in the two weeks a year. 5.6 million people visited the Oktoberfest in 2016. It starts on September 17th, as it ended on October 3rd.

Typical clothing for the Oktoberfest among women is a dirndl. The Dirndl is a Bavarian Austrian costume dress. The men usually wear leather trousers with a checked shirt and knee-bodches.
