Age: pianists of 18-32 years of age, i.e. born not after February 1, 1990 and not before April 2, 1976.

The pre-selection based on videotapes:

Applicants are required to send videocassettes in VHS PAL/SECAM format together with the application documentation. The duration of a videotaped recital – 25 minutes; program: any piece by Sergei Rachmaninov.

24 pianists will be admitted to the first stage, up to 12 will be admitted to the second stage; 6 contestants will be admitted to the final. The order of appearance will be drawn by lot and remains fixed throughout the competition.

Documents to be submitted by applicants:

1. A Xerox copy of a birth certificate.

2. Xerox copies of diplomas and degrees certifying the standard of the applicant's musical education.

3. A short biographical note.

4. Letters of recommendation from two eminent musicians; copies of any published references to musical activities, public performances, etc., if any.

5. Two recent glossy black-and-white pictures of 13x18 cm, and 1 picture of 3x4 cm.

6. Admission fee: US$ 60 or the equivalent sum in Russian rubles (according to the current Russian Central bank exchange rate) payable upon arrival.

Conditions of stay:

The Organizing Committee will provide and cover:

Lodging, meals, daily practice facilities and space for all non-Muscovites, travel expenses for six finalists, and the stay of those contestants who failed in the first and second stages, within 24 hours after the announcement of the results.

The Organizing Committee will not cover:

- a visa fee charged by the Russian Embassies;

- accommodation and meals for the persons who are accompanying contestants;

- travel expenses of contestants who failed to get into the final.

The Organizing Committee:

1) upon a contestant's request, will make a hotel reservation and book tickets for contest recitals for accompanying persons.

2) will award the prizes and diplomas identified as follows:

The first prize US$ 10,000 and the laureateship.

The second prize US& 4,000 and the laureateship.

The third prize US$ 3,000 and the laureateship.

A prize awarded to a finalist for

performing the program

based on Rachmaninoff pieces. US$ 2,000 and the laureateship.

Diploma US$ 400 and the laureateship.

Diploma US$ 400 and the laureateship.

Diploma US$ 400 and the laureateship.

The competition's prizewinners will perform at the final concerts gratis.

The jury reserves the right:

- not to award all the prizes

- to divide the prizes.

Repertoire:

1st stage (duration: up to 20 minutes).

1. One of the following pieces:

Sergei Rachmaninov. Polka

Mendelsohn-Rachmaninov. Scherzo from the score to Shakespeare's "The Midsummer's Dream".

2. Sergei Rachmaninov. One or several pieces from opus 3.

3. One or several pieces by any of the 19-20th century composers.

2nd stage (duration: 50 to 60 minutes).

(Pieces not performed in the first stage).

  1. Sergei Rachmaninov. One or several preludes (op. op. 23, 32).
  2. Sergei Rachmaninov. One or several etudes-pictures (op. op. 33, 39).
  3. One large-form piece by any Russian or West-European composer.

3d stage

1. Sergei Rachmaninov. One of the four concertos or Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.

Notes.

An applicant's submitted program can not be altered.

All pieces are performed from memory.

Should any dispute arise from the interpretation of the rules of the Fourth Sergei Rachmaninov International Competition, only the Russian version shall be held valid.
