The Five, Full Time Ministries –The Teacher, Part 1

I. The Teacher

A. Eph 4:11, 1Cor 12:28, Rom 12:7. The “Teacher” is mentioned in 2 places in terms of a full time ministry gift, and then once more in Rom 12:7 as a “teaching gift” which may indicate a part time ministry of teaching that is also a divine call.

B. The Teacher is a divine and supernatural gift and ministry exclusively to the Body of Christ.

Mt 28:18-19.

Jesus is speaking:Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with youalways, to the very end of the age.”- NIV)

1. The Teacher is also the only ministry listed in all of the 3 places where the gifts and
ministries are discussed. From this we can see it is a vital, well defined gift to the BOC.

2. When we talk about the Teacher, we’re not talking about Sunday school teachers. We didn’t
have these until the 18th century. But a Teacher called by God could be a SS teacher
temporarily as he/she grows in the Word and the gift.

3. In addition, a teacher called by God is not a teacher merely by virtue of natural ability,
inclination or previous experience as might be the case with a school teacher who also might
be a good Sunday school teacher. It is a supernatural endowment so that the one having the
gift receives special revelation and anointing from God as he or she studies and teaches the
Word. Supernatural teaching will never be dry, boring or pedantic, but it will beas ‘living
water’and will leave the group refreshed.

C. A teaching ministry may also accompany the other 5 fold ministries as well.

1. As we’ve seen in previous lessons, one may be an apostle, prophet and teacher, a prophet and
teacher, a pastor and teacher, and even an evangelist and teacher.2Tim 1:11, Acts 13:1, and
Acts 14:14.

D. The Teacher will often have a traveling ministry, unlike the pastor or pastor/teacher who will spend most of his time near his flock. Mk 6:5-6

1. I have personally found the internet to be a new way to “travel” without leaving home.

2. The teacher’s ministry to the BOC is really, never done. There’s always more to learn, so he is, in most cases, continually on the go, and he will often return to the same places again and again as he gains new revelation and as the people need additional teaching to mature as believers.

E. The Teacher will have a God given, inner drive to teach.Phil 2:13, Col1:29, 1Cor 9:16-18.

F. The Teacher has a strongdrive to justify all he teaches by the Word. 1Tim 2:7, 2Cor 4:2.

G. God’s approval will be the Teacher’s #1 priority.1Thes 2:4-6,9, 2Cor6:4,7.
