AGE: You must be at least 18 years of age. It is highly recommended that yoube at least 21 years of age because most agencies will not hire applicants younger than 21. For those younger than 21, you are strongly encouraged to take college coursework to earn a degree. Rio Hondo College offers AS degrees in Administration of Justice and Corrections. There are also other avenues you may pursue toenhance your chances of employment as a police officer if you have not yet reached the age of 21. Positions as Correctional Officer/Jailer, Dispatcher, and Forensics Specialist are positive career stepping stones for the potential police officer. Rio Hondo College provides training in each of these specialties as well. Call the Police Academy at (562) 463-7724 to inquire about these classes.

EDUCATION:In order to become a peace officer in California, you must have a high school diploma or GED or have a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved institution. The more education you have, the better. (Recruiters are particularly interested in candidates with college credits or degrees.)

LICENSE:You must have a valid California Driver’s License.

FINGERPRINT

CHECK:You must be fingerprinted and receive a DOJ clearance to possess a firearm. Therefore, you cannot have any felony or domestic violence convictions.

MEDICAL EXAM:You must have a complete medical examination before being admitted into the academy. The results must be recorded on a medical form provided by Rio Hondo College. Upon being advised that you will be allowed to attend a police academy class, you will be given instructions as to when to get your medical examination.

ACADEMY

LENGTH:The Basic Police Academy class is offered in a modular (part-time) format, taking approximately 12 months to complete. Each module is considered a separate stand-alone course and will require independent registration. Completion of the three modules meets the same requirements as the Regular Basic Course. The modules will be presented in the following order: Module III (PAC 075B), Module II (PAC 075C) and Module I (PAC 075D). Pending POST approval, the Basic Police Academy will also be offered in an intensive (full-time) format, taking approximately 6 months to complete.

GRADUATION:Upon graduation from Modular III, you will receive a certificate of completion that enables you to qualify for any police department in the State of California as a Level III Reserve Officer.

Upon graduation from Modular II, you will receive a certificate of completion that enables you to qualify for any police department in the State of California as a Level II Reserve Officer

Upon graduation from Modular I, you will receive a certificate of completion that enables you to qualify for any police department in the State of California as a Level I Reserve Officer or as an entry-level peace officer. ** NOTE: Some departments may require you to attend their PoliceAcademy (i.e., LAPD, LASD, CHP).

The certificates of completion are valid for three years from the date of their issuance.

RECRUITING:Numerous police agencies recruit in each Academy class. Many of the pre-service cadets are hired while still attending the Academy.

MISC.:Rio Hondo Police Academy is POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) Certified. It is the Regional Training Center for Los Angeles County.

Rio Hondo is not a live-in Academy.

The extended/modular police academy is designed to allow cadets who must maintain full time employment the opportunity to complete police academy training. The classes meetWednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings from 6:00PM to 10:00PM and Saturdays from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Due to training requirements, some evening classes will extend to 11:00PM and some Sundays will be scheduled.

The program is also designed to meet the needs of those aspiring to be Level III, Level II, or Level I reserve police officers.

  • To qualify as a Level III reserve police officer, one must complete Module III, which consists of a minimum of 144 hours of training.
  • To qualify as a Level II reserve police officer, one must complete Module III ANDModule II, which consists of an additional minimum of 189 hours of training.
  • To qualify as a Level I reserve police officer or a full-time sworn police officer, one must complete Module III, the Module II, AND Module I, which consists of an additional minimum of 394 hours of training.

The modules do not have to be completed at one time. For example, one could complete Modules III and II, leave the program, and then return the next year to complete Module I. Also the modules do not need to be completed at the same training facility. For example, one could complete Modules III and II at another facility and then take Module I atRio Hondo College.

Prerequisites for entry into Module III: medical clearance, California DOJ clearance for firearms, passing score on POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (agency-sponsored cadets are exempt), and valid driver’s license.

Residence Requirements

Rio Hondo College is a public community college under California law.Legal requirements pertaining to residence must be honored.At the time of registration, all students will be required to file a “statement of residence.” Withholding or falsifying pertinent information on this form could be reason for dismissal.Studentsliving in California for at least 12consecutive months may attend Rio Hondo College and pay resident fees (subject to the terms and conditions of the College policy, Stateregulations, and federal law).California non-residents who have graduated from a California high school may qualify for the non-resident tuition exemption (AB540).

Residency Determination Date:

The day immediately preceding the opening day of instruction for each semester is designated as the residency determination date.

Residency Determination:

A student who cannot qualify as a resident must pay non-resident tuition.

A student seeking reclassification from non-resident to resident status must complete a Supplemental Residency Questionnaire (available in the Admissions & Records Office) and attach original and legible copies of all documents presented in support of the claim for resident status. After verification of the records, original copies will be returned. Any claim for reclassification must be filed on or before the residency determination date.

Non-Resident Students:

Education Code Section 76140 requires that non-resident tuition be charged to students who are not residents of the State of California and who attend public community colleges within the State.

$46.00 plus $190.00 out-of-state fee per unit = $236.00 per unit

All pre-service candidates for PAC075B Basic Course Module III (Ext)and PAC 040Basic Course Intensive will be required to take the written POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB)and achieve a minimum T-Score of 42 in order to be admitted into the academy courses. It is a two-and-a-half hour test that measures reading and writing skills.

Test dates will be announced on the Rio Hondo Police Academy website.

You must have an MD, DO, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner complete and sign the Rio Hondo College Police AcademyMedical Clearance for EntranceForm. The completed form is due on the first day of class.

The below vendor, which has two different locations, will conduct a basic physical exam and complete our Medical Clearance for Entrance Form at a cost of $75. They also take most insurance coverage.The basic exam does not include any blood work or specialized tests (such as EKG). Should the medical professional determine these tests are necessary, there will be an additional cost.

You are under no obligation to use this vendor, and the vendor has no relationship with Rio Hondo College. You may take the form to any MD, DO, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner of your choosing. (The Rio Hondo College Student Health Services Office will not accept the form for sign off.)

2.Pants: Dickies #874KH; khaki. Shall be long enough to form a slight break in the front crease of each pant leg when standing at attention. No cuffs. Each cadet must possess a minimum of 2 pairs of pants.
