My Weekly Writing

By Anne Frickey

SilerCityCenter, CentralCarolinaCommunity College

Lesson:Practice, Practice, Practice!

Topics:My Favorite Animal; A Day in My Life

Level:This class consisted of Intermediate ESL students.

Time:We completed each topic in a single three-hour class period.

Process: I like to give a writing topic for one class each week. The student writing samples that follow come from a two-week period. The first week, the topic was My Favorite Animal. The following week, the topic was A Day In My Life.

After students are given a topic, they each gather their own ideas and decide what their response will be. Then, before they begin writing, students share some of their thoughts with the class, talking about what they plan to write.

Next, students write independently. I work with students individually to help define their ideas and guide the sentence structure. I am more concerned about conveying the students’ thoughts than with grammar and spelling. Each of the following writing samples was done in one three-hour class.

For this Consortium Writing Project, my students’ work has been typed, preserving each person’s spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar in the transcription.
