End Point Assessment Summary
1 / cmi end point assessment (epa) process

The end point assessment is designed to be the final synoptic assessment. The Apprenticeship grading assessment is based upon:-

  • A test of knowledge using scenarios with questions
  • A competency-based Interview
  • A review of a portfolio of evidence
  • A review of a work based project with a presentation on a work based project and Q&A session
  • A professional discussion relating to CPD activity

The End Point Assessment Process is demonstrated in the diagram below:

2 / gateway progression

The Training Provider needs to confirm the Gateway Assessment has been met and request that CMI conduct the End Point Assessment byputtingin writing that:

  • The apprentice has been registered for a minimum of 12 months
  • Where applicable the apprentice has completed the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership. The apprentice’s work has been marked by the Training Provider and a sample moderated by CMI and a pass has been awarded.
  • The portfolio of evidence has been reviewed, assessed and marked, by the Training Provider, and both the Training Provider and Employer confirm that they agree there is sufficient evidence that the apprentice has demonstrated all the skills, knowledge and behaviours against the standard.
  • The apprentice holds Level 2 in English and Maths.

The Training Provider will then:

  • Make the apprentice’s portfolio and project detail available to CMI.
  • Make the apprentice’s CPD log available to CMI.

Portfolio

The evidence contained in the portfolio will comprise of complete and/or discrete pieces of work that cover the totality of the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard.Further information on the requirements of the portfolio of evidence can be found in the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Assessment Plan

A CMI Approved Independent Assessor will mark the Portfolio of evidence against the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard. Each portfolio will take 4 hour to mark per candidate. The Independent Assessor will also provide feedback on the portfolio and draw out questions from the portfolio to be used in the interview session later.

Work Based Project and CPD Activity

The Work Based Project is one that represents the skills, knowledge and behaviours in the standard. Further information on the requirements of the work based project can be found in the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Assessment Plan. The learner will produce evidence around their CPD activity.

A CMI Approved Independent Assessor will mark the work based project and CPD activity against the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard. Each work based project and CPD activity will take 2 hours to mark per candidate.The Independent Assessor will also provide feedback on the project and draw out questions from the project to be used in the interview session later.

4 / cmi confirm apprentice may progress

CMI will mark the portfolio of evidence, work based project and CPD activity within 15 working days. The grading will not be issued at this stage. If the learners Portfolio of Evidence, work based project and CPD activity pass, then CMI will confirm that the Training Provider can then proceed to the next stage. If the work does not pass then feedback will be given to the Training Providerto enable remedial action to be taken.

5 / schedule final epa session

The Training Provider will then:-

  • Request a date for the Independent Assessor to attend the EPA. CMI can allocate a maximum of 5 candidates EPA in one day.
  • The EPA should typically be held at the Training Provider or the Employer premises.
  • Forward a copy of the presentation to CMI at least a week before the date of the EPA so that it may be distributed to the assessor.

6 / the knowledge test

The apprentice will be asked to complete a 30 minute Knowledge Test. Further information on the requirements of the test can be found in the Team Leader/Supervisor Apprenticeship Standard Assessment Plan.

Apprentices will take the knowledge test online prior to the Final EPA Day. The test will be a multiple choice question format.

7 / final epa session – presentation, interview & professional discussion

The EPA process will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes per candidate (this does not include the knowledge test but does allow time for panel discussion to review and facilitate grading).The EPA can be held face to face or virtually where appropriate measures are in place to validate the apprentice’s identification.

The EPA Assessment Panel will consist of the following people:-

  • CMI Approved Independent Assessor (Chair)
  • A representative from the Training Provider
  • A representative from their employer
  • The candidate will also be present at the EPA

Presentation

The apprentice will deliver a 15 minute presentation. Further information on the requirements of the presentation can be found in the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Assessment Plan

At the end of the presentation the panel will conduct a question and answer session which is anticipated to last no more than 15 minutes.

Structured Competency Based Interview

The CMI Approved Independent Assessor will conduct an interview with the candidate. Further information on the nature of the interview can be found in the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard Assessment Plan.

The panel will ask questions which have been created by the Independent Assessor when marking the portfolio of evidence. The Independent Assessor will also have some pre-set questions they may ask.

It is anticipated that the interview will last no more than 30 minutes.

Professional Discussion relating to CPD activity

The CMI Approved Independent Assessor will review and conduct a professional discussion with the candidate. Further information on the nature of the professional discussion can be found in the Team Leader/Supervisor Apprenticeship Standard Assessment Plan.

The panel will ask questions which have been created by the Independent Assessor when marking the CPD Activity.

The professional discussion should last no more than 15 minutes

8 / grading

The final assessment and grading will be undertaken by the CMI Independent Assessor. The Independent Assessor will award marks based on their assessment of the portfolio, knowledge test, professional discussion and the interview.

CMI will issue the results of the End Point Assessment within 10 working days of the final session.

Candidates that fail the marking of the portfolio of evidence will not be put forward to the later stages of the EPA. Feedback will be given to the candidates on how they can address any short comings.

Candidates that fail the Knowledge Test or final EPA will be able to apply for a second EPA. Feedback will be given to the candidates on how they can address any short comings.
