This prize was set up many years ago but this is the first time it has been awarded at Academic Prizegiving Giving. It is awarded to a Salopian of Distinction who has an offer of a place at Oxford, and who lives in Shropshire.

The Moss Prize was founded by Reverend H.W. Moss (Headmaster 1866-1908).

The Cross Prize was founded by Mr and Mrs P.K. Cross in memory of their son Timothy (O.S.), who left school in 1942 and was killed in France two years later.

The Marshall Travel Prize for Classics /

This prize was founded by Mr H.J.O. Marshall (O.S.), and is awarded occasionally to any pupil gaining a place to read the Classics at Oxford or Cambridge. The prize will be spent upon travel in Classical lands.

The Philip Sidney Prize

The prize was founded by Miss E. Mapother in 1955, and is awarded for an extended essay on a topic usually connected with Shakespeare, Sidney or Renaissance music and letters.
The Kitson-Clark Prize / J.W. Flowers (I)
This prize was founded in 1915 by Colonel E. Kitson- Clark and is usually awarded for the best piece of original poetry composed by a member of the Sixth Form.
The Allan Creative Writing Cup / J.R. Humpish (SH)
This prize was presented by The Allan family, whose sons have a great interest in all genres of creative writing.
The R.S. Thomas Poetry Prize / T.J.J. Simmons (Ch)
This prize was founded as a tribute to the life and work of R.S. Thomas, by the poet’s wife. It is awarded for the best piece of original writing by a member of the lower school.

This prize is awarded for excellence in both the academic and practical elements of A level Theatre Studies.
The Goulding Family Prize for Drama / J.W. Flowers (I)
This prize is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to school drama. The prize has been founded by the Goulding family, for whom theatre at Shrewsbury became particularly significant.

The prize was awarded for a brief talk before a small audience on “spells”. In this instance, a “spell” is a special Salopian term for a short passage of poetry (or prose) chosen for its suitability for reciting aloud. The word was used by Frank McEachran, one of the most remarkable men to have taught at Shrewsbury last century (from 1935 to 1975), to describe the passages that he made his pupils recite aloud.

This prize was founded by the Reverend Dr Bright in 1909, and is awarded to the best historian in the Upper Sixth.
The Murray Senior Prize
for History / S.J.L. Constantine (S)
This prize is named after J.R. Murray Senior, former Master of this School (1932-1951), and it is awarded to the best historian in the Lower Sixth.
The Quinn Prize
for Third Form History / L.G.B. Stewart (PH)
This prize was founded in 1963 by the Reverend James Quinn in memory of his son, the Reverend Edward G. Quinn, killed in the Second World War. It is awarded to the best oral history project in the Third Form.
The Dorothy David Prize
for Religious Studies / I.Z. Atkins (MSH)
This prize was founded in 1961 by E.W. David in memory of his wife. It is awarded to the outstanding Religious Studies pupil in the Upper Sixth.
The Robertson-Eustace Prize
for Geography / A.W. Pollock (I)
This prize was founded by Major R.W.B. Robertson-Eustace (O.S.) in 1943. It is awarded to the outstanding pupil in the Upper Sixth.
The Lower Sixth Form
Geography Prize / L.J. Emms (MSH)
This prize is awarded for the student who has contributed most to the Lower Sixth in terms of fieldwork aptitude, written quality and general enthusiasm toward achieving excellence.
The Fifth Form Geography Prize / S.N. Chandler (Rb)
This prize is awarded for outstanding work at GCSE level and includes membership of the Royal Geographical Society.
The Arnold Hagger Mathematics Prize / Y.C. Chow (SH)
This is the main School Mathematics Prize, which was named by Mrs S.M. Hagger in memory of her husband, Arnold Hagger (Mathematics Master 1946-1974), who was Second Master for many years. It is awarded on the results of a paper, which is designed to test innate mathematical ability rather than knowledge, and is open to any pupil in the School.
The Powell Mathematics Prize / A.K.Z. Koh (Ch)
This prize was founded in memory of Lt T.C. Powell, who was killed in the First World War. It is open to Third and Fourth Form pupils, and is awarded for the best solutions to a series of problems, which are set throughout the Michaelmas and Lent Terms.
The David Harrison

This prize is endowed by Mr and Mrs Peter Harrison in memory of their son David, who was Head of Mathematics from 1995 to 1996, and who tragically died in the mountains of Alaska in the Summer holidays of 1996. It is awarded for the best short presentation of a mathematical topic and is open to all pupils in the School.

The Hawksley Burbury

This prize was founded in memory of Charles Darwin, by Mr S. Hawksley Burbury in 1913. Candidates enter for an examination, which tests sharp observation and logical deduction in a wide range of scientific experimental tasks.
The Rolls Royce Prize / A.W. Pollock (I)
This prize was presented by the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club in 2000. It is awarded for the completion of an outstanding research project and presentation about it.
The Lampel Prize for

This prize for the outstanding naturalist was founded by Mr and Mrs Lampel, in memory of their son George (OS) who died in 1961.

This prize is awarded in memory of Gordon Riley, a founder editor of the Shropshire Star and for many years a writer of critiques of Shrewsbury School’s musical and theatrical events for that paper. It is awarded to a musician who has made a significant contribution to both classical and popular music studies during their time at the school.
The Guy Lovett Award / E.R. Storey (MSH)
The Guy Lovett Award is made in memory of a very special Salopian and outstanding oarsman who died of cancer at the age of 26. It is not often awarded but when it is, it is awarded to a pupil who, in the opinion of representatives of the Old Salopian Club and Guy Lovett's friends, has consistently demonstrated the personal qualities of courage, resolve and concern for others.
The West Family Prize / E.M. Pring (EDH)
This prize is awarded annually to a pupil who is considered to have made a notable contribution to good relations between the School and the local community. It was founded anonymously by an Old Salopian in the United States, in memory of Colonel J.M. West (1922-1957 Master and Housemaster of Dayboys and Ingram’s, and Mayor of Shrewsbury in 1952, the School Centenary Year) and Mrs West.
