PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Vida Keats

Everyone who attended our January meeting at the SylviaHotel came away with a whole new feeling of excitement about the upcoming Olympic Games. Our speaker canceled at the last minute because she had to attend the roof raising ceremony at the new figure skating complex in Richmond. However, her substitute, Kim Gordon, turned out to be a very enthusiastic and motivating speaker. Her presentation was very captivating and she addressed all our questions and concerns. I don’t know what sort of speaker Jenee Elborne would have been, but I think it may have been a stroke of luck to have Kim Gordon instead. She couldn’t have done a better job. Vanoc will be needing lots of volunteers as it gets closer to the date of the Olympics so if you are interested in volunteering you should go to the website Vancouver2010.com and download an application form.

I would like to give a special thank you to Betty Hamilton for organizing volunteers to sell tickets for Mining for Miracles at the Round Up. It was a little more complicated this year as we sold our Anniversary Cookbooks as well, and we had to deal with passing the cookbook cash box on to the next group of volunteers at the end of the day. Thank you also to all of you who volunteered to do the selling.

Another big thank you goes out to Laurie Tegart, Maureen Lipkewich and the Teck Cominco team for a job well done in the publication of our newest cookbook. Also to our members who did the typing and proof reading---Anne Jones, Natalia Thomas, Cathie Clinch and Irene Rhodes. For those of you who didn’t get your copy at the Round Up, the cookbooks will be for sale at our annual book sale on February 19th. I hope we will have a good turn out for this event as it will give you a chance to participate in this years fundraising and take home some reading material.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for the music morning in March. Judy Poliquin has purchased a block of tickets and there are still lots left. In April we will be holding our major fund raiser for the year in the form of a fashion show to be held at the Terminal City Club. Please plan to attend. We would love to see a turnout like we had for the Anniversary luncheon in October.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all.

THE END OF AN ERA

By Vida Keats

It is with great regret I announce the passing of BETTY HAINSWORTH a long time member of the Greater Vancouver Mining Women’s Association.

It was at Betty’s house on September 24th 1975, the very first meeting of what was later to be called the Greater Vancouver Mining Women’s Association was held and she became the very first president of the organization. She held that position until August 15th 1977 but continued to serve on the executive as past president. Betty worked very hard to promote the mining industry in British Columbia and for her dedication and hard work she was awarded an Honorary Lifetime membership in the GVMWA. For the remainder of her life she remained a great supporter of our organization and an inspiration to all of us.

The GVMWA would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and express our gratitude for Betty’s contribution to our organization.

Elizabeth Maud Hainsworth

Elizabeth Maud Hainsworth (née Price) passed away peacefully on January 28, 2008 in Parksville, B.C. Elizabeth was born in Swansea, Wales April 28, 1923. Joining the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force at the advent of World War II, she met the love of her life in York, England, Canadian Airman Bill Hainsworth from Kitchener, Ontario. They were married in Swansea, Wales February 14, 1944, the beginning of a wonderful marriage lasting more than 63 years.

Their first son, Robert John, was born in 1945 in Swansea, Wales. She followed her husband to London, Ontario as a War-Bride in 1946. Their second son, George Bruce, was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in 1952. After Bill's graduation as a Geologist, she followed him to Northern Canada, finally settling in the Vancouver area.

Elizabeth was very active in theatrics and ran her own business, Liz's Lingerie Shop in Vancouver, for many years. Her proudest accomplishment was being the co-founder of the Greater Vancouver Mining Women's Association, where she remained active for many years.

Survived by her loving husband, Bill, two sons Rob and George, three grandsons, Kaleeg, Shane and Michael, and five great-granddaughters Ella, Heulwen, Madison, Avery and Bridget. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A service will be held at St. Edmund's Anglican Church in Parksville, on Sunday February 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm.

A long time member passes on

By Vida Keats

I regret to inform you that another of our long time members has passed away. Rosemary Stack was a long time and devoted member of the Greater Vancouver Mining Women’s Association. She served on the executive in the early years and even in her failing health she loved to attend our meetings. She will be remembered for her quiet presence and pleasant smile. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

Below you will find a copy of her obituary followed by some fond memories from her daughter Susan.

STACK - Rosemary (Malewski) Rosemary passed away peacefully on February 3, 2008 in Vancouver at the age of 78, and will be welcomed into heaven by her loving husband, Donald Francis. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her sister Margaret Metz; daughters Kathy (Brian) Yamasaki, and Susan (Evan); sons Mike, and Kevin (Nadine); grandchildren Jason, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Tyler, and Graham; as well as many relatives and friends in Chicago. Rosemary enjoyed a life of travel, and was an active member of the CWL and the Mining Women's Association. Her ever-present smile and her generous spirit will be with us forever. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all the 3rd floor staff at Brock Fahrni Pavilion. Prayers will be offered on Sunday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. from Sacred Heart Parish, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 11 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brock Fahrni through the Tapestry Foundation for Health Care: "Toodle-oo!" Condolences may be forwarded to Kearney Funeral Services 604-736-0268

Rosemary was an awesome lady who lived a very full and exciting life. Born and raised in the USA, she and my father lived briefly, due to a job relocation, in Mexico before settling in Canada. She loved to sing, hum, be part of organizations and spend time with her children and grandchildren. Traveling was a big part of her life in the Mining Industry where she made many dear friends. She enjoyed every minute they spent in London and Japan, and being the out-going open minded good sport that she always was, she took time out to pet a cheetah in Africa and hold a koala bear in Australia. She loved to sing, dance, play cards, and entertain. Although Frank Sinatra was her favourite singer, she and I once took our lawn chairs and spent an entire day down at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival where she enjoyed immensely the music of Pete Seeger, and various other genres of music from all around the world. For the past 7 yrs Mom had been living in a care home where she became one of the "favourites" due to her easy going nature, and especially her beautiful smile. We heard that sentiment echoed throughout her journey through various hospital stays and staffing changes.
She's now at peace, in a better place where she is free from all her troubles.
We will all miss her so very much.

Mining for Miracles

by Betty Hamilton

Our booth at the Round-Up was a great success. Thanks and congratulations go to all the members who donated their time and effort to make this event a particularly worthwhile one for the B.C. Children’s Hospital. Thanks go out to Natalia Thomas, Margaret Berthelsen, Irene Rhodes, Kay Collins, Barbara Paterson, Diana Tikkanen, Laurie Drummond, Vida Keats, Anne Hogan, Rochelle Magoon, Anne Jones, Cathie Clinch, Courtney Mitchell, Doreen Pewsey, Mary Leathley, Pat Hogan, Anne Kenway, Laurie Tegart, Trina Prior, Celia Utley, Julie Matthews, Michelle McConachie, Madeline Dujardin, Cathy Barron, and Betty Hamilton who were our gracious and hardworking representatives. We raised $5,615.00 during the four days.

We have received congratulatory emails from Celina Sookachoff, Colin Judrie and Kea Barker. At the AMEBC lunch on January 29th the representative from BHP Billiton, who presented the diamond to Colin Judrie, praised the Greater Vancouver Mining Women for their support selling diamond raffle tickets each year for the Mining for Miracles fundraising effort.

The Mining for Miracles Committee has chosen a new project. Our goal is to raise a total of $3,000,000 over three years to build a Level 3 Containment Biological Research Laboratory on site at the B.C. Children’s Hospital. The purpose of this lab is to do research into the causes of inflammatory and infectious diseases in children. Research scientists want to be able to find the causes of such diseases so effective preventative treatments can be developed. An example of such work resulting in disease prevention was achieved recently in the prevention of the spread of meningitis in British Columbia in recent years. The Mining for Miracles Committee is very enthusiastic that this project will enable research scientists already working at B.C. Children’s Hospital to achieve real breakthroughs in disease prevention.

Congratulations to our members who also raised $410.00 from cookbook sales at the Round-Up. Way to go gals!

WAYS AND MEANS

By Laurie Tegart and Natalia Thomas

Don’t miss our annual Book Sale at the Arbutus Club on February 19th! Books are priced at $1.00 for Paperbacks, $2.50 for Hardcover, $4.00 for unique books and a discount for large volumes. The “Best Of The Underground Gourmet” will be also be available for $10.00 at the book sale as well as on our website. All used books, videos, CD’s & DVD’s can be dropped off at the Arbutus Club just before the meeting (please give us enough time to sort the books) or you can check last month’s Drift for drop off points. Don’t miss your chance at taking home some great books as this is the last book sale for a few years.

Considering we weren’t expecting to sell very many cook books at the Roundup with Teck Cominco Ltd giving away free copies to delegates, we sold 42 and raised $420.00! We also received many compliments and a lot of interest from companies and organizations wanting to sell the cook book for us both locally and at the PDAC in Toronto next month.

We are currently in the process of planning the Spring Fashion Show on April 22nd at the Terminal City Club. If you are interested in being a model for us this year or know someone who would be, we are looking for models in every shape, size and age!! Also, if you would like to help in the planning of the show, please contact Laurie ASAP. As soon as all details are available for the Fashion Show they will be posted on the website and will be in the March Drift.

We look forward to seeing you at the book sale! Empty out your bookcases of books you’ve already read and bring home some new ones to enjoy. Remember, without the support of our Membership these successful fundraisers would not be possible. Thank you!
