Pages 3-5:June 15, 1942: Anne’s long rant about her classmates, both positive and negative. Reflects her early teenage concerns regarding popularity and clique associations. Also, reveals both her confidence and insecurities about where she fits in.

Page 6:June 20, 1942 – Irony in the passage regarding Anne’s thoughts that no one will ever read the diary or be interested in the ramblings of a 13-year-old girl. Profound confession that she doesn’t have a close friend with whom to confide.

Pages 5-8June 20, 1942 – Anne introduces the identity of her fictional friend Kitty as the one she will write to in her diary. Gives background of her family. Grandmother died in January 1942. Germany had invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940 and the beginning of the anti-Jewish decrees occur – Anne makes a long list of the forbidden acts. Despite all, Anne’s tone remains upbeat.

Pages17-18July 5, 1942 – Discusses her acceptance into the Jewish Lyceum on a conditional basis. Her acceptance is very important as Jews have now been restricted from attending public schools. Anne’s report card: D, C- and B range. She mentions that Margot is brilliant (in terms of her sister’s report card). Anne references that her father has had to turn over his business to Mr. Kleiman, Kugler, and Gies. For the first time, Anne’s father shares his concern regarding the probable need to go into hiding soon.

Pages 18 -21 July 8, 1942 – Margot, at age 16, receives an official call-up notice. Family must move up their plan to escape into hiding by 10 days. Mr. van Daan is alerted and Jan and Miep Gies come late at night to help take as much clothing as possible to their secret location. Their tenant Mr. Goldschmidt is oblivious to the plans being made in the Frank household. Anne packs her diary and other belongings somewhat haphazardly. She must leave behind her beloved cat Moortje.

Pages 24-25 July 10, 1942 – Anne discusses the unsettled condition of the annex and that her mother and sister Margot were too upset to help out with the clean up and organization that was desperately needed. Anne and her father do all of the initial and principal work which needs to be accomplished quickly. Anne’s resilience and upbeat spirit is revealed in stark contrast to the quiet, worried, and somewhat “paralyzed” stance of Anne’s mother and sister.
