iPad Help Sheet

A collection of answers to questions that you might have and the children have already asked.

Overview: As soon as you get the iPad (see below for more detail):

  1. Put it in the case
  2. Create a gmail/Hotmail and iTunes account to be used on the iPad;
  3. Change iPad name using the format FitzChild’sInitialsClass;
  4. Register with Find My iPhone;
  5. Switch PASSCODE on and create a passcode that your child will remember.

Setting Up the iPad

For greater detail I would suggest downloading the iPad User guide. Visit iBooks App – Store – Search for iPad User Guide (It’s free).

The iPad comes already set up with apps that the school has purchased. These apps belong to the school – you will not be able to delete them. We will add more if needed and these will be sent automatically to the iPadvia the school all you will need to do is authorise them to download.

To help your child personalise the device you should create a new iTunes account which will be used only on the school iPad. When I am able I will set up secure school email accounts for all of the children. In the meantime I suggest that you create a free Hotmail/gmailand iTunes account which you use only with the school iPad account. When you do this do not add your credit card details. I strongly suggest that you use vouchers as you can then limit spends. Do not feel that you need to purchase any apps, there are lots of great free ones and we will purchase any that we feel everyone needs.

As soon as you have created these accounts please sign up on the “Find my iPhone” app. This allows you and use to locate the iPad should it be lost or stolen. I am also able to do this via a Meraki account (you will see this app on the iPad).

Go to Settings – General – Passcode Lock - and help your child to create a password that they will remember. We will ask the children for these and keep a record of them. This is to prevent unauthorised access to the device and will prevent data/apps being wiped if the iPad is lost.

Go to Settings – About – Name – and change the name of the iPad. Please use your child’s initial’s and class prefixed by Fitz. e.g. FitzRE6. Do not use their full name.

Restrictions

The iPads have been set up with restrictions. Your child will not be able to download songs, music, films or apps that have an age restriction above 9 or PG for films. We have also removed the browser Safari and installed a filtered browser called Mobicip. This prevents inappropriate material from being viewed.

As this is a school remote device you will not be able to backup via a PC or Mac using iTunes. You can only download apps, etc, via WiFi. You can back up documents via the Cloud (which you will need to set up).

If you child ever accesses inappropriate material please let us know immediately.

Transporting the iPad

The iPad must be kept in the case. When it is transported to and from school it must be in a bag. They must not be carried to and from school out of a bag.

The iPad must be brought to and from school every day unless your child is told otherwise.

Charging the iPad

Please ensure that the iPad is charged overnight. Once a month you should let the battery run down to 0% as this prolongs the life of it.

WiFi

The iPad has been configured to join the school filtered network. You will need to set it up to join your home WiFi. There are also lots of free public WiFi hotspots that you can also join but be aware that these are not necessarily filtered.

Can my child install other apps and games and music?

Yes, as long as they are not age restricted. The children have been reminded that inappropriate use in school or at home will mean that the iPad is removed from them.

Can I limit the amount of time my child uses it?

Yes, absolutely – and you should – just as we will in school. Take it off them and give it to me if they are not listening. I have already told the children that if you feel they are using it too much and they ignore your instructions to stop I will take it off them.

Can I use the iPad?

Of course, but please bear in mind that this is a learning device and will be brought to and from school and anything you create or access will be visible. You might not want your business accounts to be shared with the whole class!

Can they change the wallpaper/home screen?

Yes, as long as the image is appropriate for school.

How do I choose which apps to buy?

We have purchased the apps that we will use in school. Periodically we will recommend useful free apps and purchase subject specific apps. These will be installed remotely. With about one million apps it’s impossible to recommend apps. You should not feel that you need to buy any apps at all. In fact, please try to ensure that your child does not go on a free app download frenzy as this will fill up the memory of the device very quickly.

What happens if the iPad is lost, stolen or damaged?

Please let the school know immediately so that we can track it, lock it, report it, fix it or claim for it.

Can they download and read ibooks?

Yes, however, they should also ensure that they are reading books printed on paper.

Can we take the device on holiday, etc?

Yes, this is a long term loan and you will use it as you would if you owned it. Help the children to look after it.
