The Design Process

Introduction

Technology is about designing and making objects that will solve problems and make things better. It is an integral part of our daily lives.

People have always designed and made things for all sorts of reasons, but changes have never happened so fast before. Australia’s future prosperity will depend on people who are technologically competent and who are creative and flexible.

Technology teaches you ways of coping with problems you have never met before. This is a good way of preparing you for a future full of changes and new ideas.

The Design Brief

A design brief is a set of guidelines or expectations for the design project. It is an overview of what you will make and describes the need it will fulfill or problem it will solve. You have been provided with the design brief for your project below.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO:

Design and produce a Virtual Zoo experience for a Year 3 student who lives in the remote outback of Australia. This student cannot easily get access to a zoo and so you are to design a Virtual Zoo in Microsoft Powerpoint in the form of an interactive multimedia website which will give this student the experience of having been to a zoo. Your zoo may include any animals you like as long they are real. You must have a minimum of 10 animals.

Function

Brainstorm and write down eight(8) Functions/Features that you will include in your zoo design and rank them in order of importance.

Order / Description

Write a description of the idea you have for your zoo:

Research & Ideas

Where could you go to do some research for your zoo?

What ideas will the Natural Environment give you for your zoo?

How will you design your zoo to appeal to boys/girls (or both)?

Materials

What Hardware & Software will be needed to complete your project?

Time/Action Plan

A time/action plan will help you plan out the progress of your project. It helps you keep on task and assists in planning what you work on during each practical lesson.

On the timeline below, indicate what you intend to complete each week on the left hand side and describe what was actually completed each week on the right hand side.
