The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management (FERM) invites applications for a full-time 1.0 FTE, 12-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

We seek a highly motivated instructor to teach and inspire students in both field and classroom settings. The successful candidate will complement and enhance the Department’s reputation for excellence in undergraduate instruction, and public education and outreach. As a critical member of the forest engineering and forest management faculty, the candidate will be responsible for delivering quality instruction and helping to maintain the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) certifications for the Department’s Forestry and Forest Engineering degrees.

The successful candidate will teach at least five undergraduate courses per year in the areas of forest harvesting operations, logging systems, harvesting management, and safety. Most of these courses include extensive field laboratory components with hands-on training. The candidate is also expected to participate in the Department’s Harvesting Simulator curriculum and the OSU Student Logging Training Program. In addition, participation in Forestry Field School, a two week experiential learning course for students, and Forest Engineering Institute, a continuing education program for forestry professionals is anticipated. The primary responsibility of this position is undergraduate education or other instructional tasks; there is no expectation for research in this position. Teaching assignments and other duties may be adjusted as the Department’s needs evolve.

Supervisory duties could include advising and managing teaching assistants, student leaders, and students in the OSU Student Logging Training Program.

This position is located in Corvallis, OR.

Position Duties:

90%-Instruction: Teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate level will include at least 5 on-campus and/or Ecampus undergraduate courses per year. The incumbent will provide lectures, lead class discussion, and administer and/or grade course assignments and exams. Other duties may include sharing management of the OSU Student Logging Training Program, participation in Forestry Field School and Forest Engineering Institute, and other outreach education activities. Teaching assignments and other duties may be adjusted as the Department’s needs evolve

10%-Service: Professional service on departmental and college committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Forest Engineering, Forestry or related disciplines appropriate to the field of teaching/instructional responsibilities.

At least two years of field experience in timber harvesting and logging systems.

Knowledge of logging safety codes (e.g. Oregon OSHA).

Experience in project/course planning, organization, cooperation, implementation and reporting.

Experience effectively communicating both verbally and in formal written documents.

A demonstrable commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching experience at the agency/company, college or university level.

Field experience in both cable and ground-based logging systems.

Field experience in all aspects of stump-to-mill operations.
