The Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs Assists in Funding Some of the Travel Costs Incurred


The Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs assists in funding some of the travel costs incurred by faculty members to participate in academic conferences, workshops and seminars, and professional and learned society meetings.

For the purposes of this funding, faculty includes all tenured, tenure track and preliminary term faculty. Contract, adjunct, instructor and emeritus faculty are not eligible for these funds.

For the purposes of this funding, participation includes presenting a paper, presenting a poster, and participating on a panel or roundtable. Chairing a session or participating as a discussant are not included.

Applicants should complete the FPA Conference Travel Support Application Form available online at: and submit it to their Chair/Director for approval. The applicant should then forward the application to the Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Affairs). Please attach a copy of the acceptance of your paper or a conference program or documentation of the board meeting you are attending as a board member. The Dean’s office will advise the applicant of the funding support that will be provided.

The funds available may change from year to year. For the 2016-2018 fiscal year, faculty who have been at Carleton five years or more are eligible for up to $1,000 for conference travel; faculty who have been at Carleton less than five years are eligible for up to $1,250. Faculty are eligible for funds once during the fiscal year which runs from May 1st until April 30th.

Funding is available for conference fee registration (not for association fees), accommodation and transportation costs up to the value of economy class air fare. Food costs are not covered.

Travel advance requests and travel reimbursements will be administered in accordance with the University’s travel policy. Applicants who receive a travel advance for a non-refundable ticket are required to take out travel insurance.

Within 10 days of returning, applicants should submit a completed Travel Expense Report (TER) electronically through Carleton’s Travel and Expense Reimbursement System ( Once approved by finance and the applicant’s Chair/Director, the report will be forwarded electronically to the Dean’s office for approval.

RETROACTIVE FUNDING WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

This fund is intended to assist the attendance of faculty members at scholarly conferences or to attend academic association board meetings. Applications must be approved by the Chair/Director, and then forwarded to the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Affairs. Please attach a copy of the acceptance of your paper by the conference organizers or a copy of the conference program; or provide documentation of the board meeting you are attending as a board member.

NB: Please submit an electronic Travel Expense Report to finance within 10 days of your return.
