The DBQ Sandwich Method

When using documents to strengthen your argument, it is very important to place them properly into your paragraph. The Sandwich Method is when you are expressing a certain point. Then, you use a quote from a document that supports the point you are making. Finally, your next sentence should somehow tie the previous two sentences together. Think of it this way:

Your original thought.

A document reference.

Your original thought.

Here are some examples:

Document #1:

Nations are great in our times only by means of the activities which they develop; it is not simply by the peaceful shining forth of institutions…that they are great at this hour…something else is needed for France…that she must also be a great country exercising all of her rightful influence over the destiny of Europe, that she ought to propagate this influence throughout the world and carry everywhere that she can her language, her customs, her flag, her arms, and her genius.

Imperialism caused intense competition among the world powers to establish their dominance globally by enforcing their culture and traditions on others. “Something else is needed for France…that she ought to propagate this influence throughout the world and carry everywhere that she can her language, her customs, her flag…” (Doc. 1). As a result, countries like France began to colonize areas of the world like Southeast Asia, and enforced laws relating to proper clothing, Western education, and currency.

Document #2

Many human rights groups believe that the failure for the world to respond to genocidal acts has a lot to do with racism. According to Beeler’s cartoon, the United Nations tends to react slowly to atrocities that occur in places like Africa (Doc. 2). However, in 1994, NATO took quick action against the Serbians and their ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia.
