BYLAWS OF

The Criminology Society

ARTICLE I— NAME AND PURPOSE

Section 1— Name: The name of the organization shall be The Criminology Society.

Section 2— Purpose: The Criminology Society is organized to provide an environment for students that are interested in the field of criminology to come together and learn more about the field. The society will also provide an environment where members can discuss the importance of Christian principles in the field of criminology.

ARTICLE II— MEMBERSHIP

Section 1— Membership: Members are allowed to come to all events, on or off campus. Non-members are only allowed to go to events on campus. To become a member, read next section (Art. 2, Sect 2).

Section 2— Eligibility for Membership: Membership shall be open to any current student of BYU-Idaho in good standing that supports the purpose statement in Article I, Section 2. Membership is granted when: 1) A person is added as a friend to BYUI Criminology Society’s facebook page, and 2) If the person attends at least 50% of the meetings during the semester, signing in at the beginning of each event or meeting.

Section 3— Resignation and Termination: Any member may resign at any time for any reason with notification to the secretary. Resignation shall not impede a member of membership rights in subsequent semesters.

Section 4— Involuntary termination of membership: Membership will be lost if put on academic or honor code probation.A member can have their membership terminated by a majority vote of the officers and approval of the advisor.

ARTICLE III— MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Section 1— Events and Meetings: All events and meetings shall be held weekly, at a time and place designated by the president. If there is no event or meeting listed on facebook or on the calendar for the week, there is no activity that week. Meetings and events will generally be held Thursday at 7pm unless otherwise specified.

Section 2— Special Meetings: Special meetings may be called by the president, the other officers, or advisor. A majority of members may also qualify to call a special meeting.

Section 4— Notice of Meetings and Events: Allevents shall be listed on facebook. To get access to the times and places of the events, add the Criminology Society as a friend on facebook by searching: Byui Criminology-Society. Emails will also be sent out from time to time via the Sociology Department, advertising events as well. In order to go to events off campus, you must member of the Criminology Society. (see Art. 2, Sect. 1-2).

Section 5— Voting: All issues to be voted on by members shall be decided by a simple majority of those present at the meeting in which the vote takes place.

Section 6— Transportation: All drivers or passengers of private vehicles must sign the “Assumption of Risk, Release and Indemnification Agreement” form. If this form is not signed and given to an officer of the Criminology Society, you may not drive or be a passenger of a private vehicle en route to a Criminology Society related event.

ARTICLE IV— OFFICERS

Section 1— Officers: The officers of this society are as follows:

  • President
  • To conduct all meetings unless otherwise assigned to somebody else by the President.
  • To preside at all meetings.
  • To approve all funding with Vice President and check that there is adequate funds with the Treasurer.
  • Be familiar with the bylaws.
  • To maintain the BYUI Criminology facebook and BYU-I’s “society” page.
  • To approve all activities with Vice President and make sure there are no conflicts with the Event Coordinator.

  • To approve all funding with the President and check that there is adequate funds with the Treasurer.
  • Be familiar with bylaws.
  • To preside at meetings in absence of President or otherwise asked.
  • To maintain the BYUI Criminology facebook and BYU-I’s “society” page.
  • Secretary
  • To keep roll at all events and meetings.
  • To keep an accurate record of all members.
  • Keep note of things that transpire during meetings.
  • Create emails if asked by other officers.
  • Treasurer
  • Make all financial changes aware to the President and Vice President.
  • Keep Accurate, neat records of all the finances of the society. This includes: Maintaining records of the costs of activities and other Criminology Society related paraphernalia.
  • Reimbursements: The President and Vice President must approve all reimbursements before they are made.
  • Toreimburse: 1) Get a reimbursement form from Sociology Department Secretary (Sister Tingey), 2) Fill out the Reimbursement form and get requisite signatures, 3) Make one copy of the receipt and reimbursement form, 4) Staple the original receipt to the original reimbursement form together. Staple the copied receipt to the copied reimbursement form together, 5) Turn in the original, stapled reimbursement form and receipt to Sociology Department Secretary. Keep the copy for your self for records in behalf of the Criminology Society.
  • Can create committees for support.
  • Be familiar with bylaws.
  • Policy Coordinator
  • To be fully familiar with the bylaws.
  • Check the activities and other society-related functions to make sure they're succinct with the bylaws.
  • Relate all peculiarities or infractions to either the President or Vice President.
  • Can create committees for support.
  • Event and Media Coordinator
  • Organize committees to create and plan events.
  • Must approve all events with President.
  • Work with Treasurer and Policy Coordinator to make sure there are adequate funds and that policy is being maintained.
  • Work with other societies for activities if requisite.
  • Advertise our larger events in the scroll.
  • Be familiar with bylaws.

Section 2— Track System: In the case that an Officer is off track, their positions will be covered by delegation of duties to the other officers. This entails all official positions.

ARTICLE V— APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS

Section 1— Appointment of Officers: The former President and the faculty advisor for the Criminology Society shall appoint the succeeding President. In the case that the President resigns or abdicates his positions because of university regulations, the Vice President shall be temporarily instated as President until a new President can be appointed. The Vice President shall be appointed by the current President in collaboration with the faculty advisor for the Criminology Society. In most cases, the President and or Vice President should be appointed from the current officers holding other positions.

Section 2— Succession of Officers by Vote: All remaining offices are filled by 2/3-majority vote of the current officers. In the case that a two-thirds-majority vote is not possible, the President and Vice President may appoint the officer.

Section 3— Qualification of Officers: Any officer must be a current member of the society, in good standing of the university, and attend at least 75% of meetings.

Section 4— Removal of Officers: Any officer whose status changes from good standing with the university shall be removed from office. Officers may also be removed by a one-half-majority vote of the remaining current officers and upon approval of the faculty advisor.

ARTICLE VI— FORMULATION OF COMMITTEES

Section 1— Committee Formation: The officers may create committees as needed, such as fundraising, activities, or other necessary committees.

Section 2— Appointment of Committee Members: Any officer shall have the authority to appoint the members of the committee.

Section 3— Removal of Committee Members: Committee members shall be removed if membership is lost, or by a vote of the officers with the majority in attendance approving.

ARTICLE VII— ADMENDMENTS

Section 1— Amendments to the Bylaws: Amendments can be made by 2/3 of the officers consenting to the proposed amendment and 2/3 of the members in a pre-approved date. All members shall be notified of the meeting where the vote shall take place at least one week before by email.
