POSITION:ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER (Seasonal/Contract)

SALARY: $24.58 PER HOUR

HOURS OF WORK:40-HOUR WORKWEEK

POSITION DUTIES:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Animal Services, through the provision of exemplary customer service, ensure the safety of the public and animals by enforcing City by-laws regarding the control of domestic and wild animals (e.g., dogs, cats, horses, deer, raccoons, skunks, birds, rodents, snakes, etc.); educate the public regarding animal related legislation and responsible pet ownership.

  • Provide excellent customer service in response to complaints of animals in distress, sick or injured. Required to provide expert handling to rescue and release animals safely.
  • Assess the health status of animals for injury or illness in order to determine the correct course of action to take such as impound, isolate, transport to veterinarian or euthanize.
  • Respond to locations to apprehend dogs restricting access for emergency services. Act as subject matter expert when executing search and rescue seizure of dogs.
  • Educate the public and enforce municipal by-laws pertaining to animals.
  • Issue Provincial Offence Notices, licenses and orders as required.
  • Required to take witness statements, gather evidence and prepare court documents.
  • Required to appear and testify in court proceedings and appeal tribunals.
  • Attend and investigate all dog bites under the animal control by-law and Dog Owners’ Liability Act while liaising with the supervisor.
  • Patrol City operating City vehicle or on foot.
  • Pick-up deceased animals from public or private property. Arrange for the removal of large animals.
  • Required to operate a Co2 gas box. Must assess and determine when the euthanasia of wildlife is necessary. Occasionally required to assist in the tranquilization and euthanasia of shelter animals.
  • Apprehend stray domestic animals and injured/ill wildlife and transport to shelter.
  • Complete detailed reports (i.e. animals picked-up, violations issued, suspected rabid animals) on all incidents in computer system and /or black books.
  • Complete daily vehicle circle checks and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Follow guidelines set by the Ministry of Environment to operate and provide regular maintenance for the crematorium, walk-in and chest freezers as required. Report malfunctions to supervisor &/or manufacturer.
  • Perform assessments and advise re: wildlife proofing on private property.
  • Required to service private or rental city traps.
  • Provide assistance and information to public or refer to appropriate agencies; participate in special events, i.e. shelter tours, school talks, etc. to present information.
  • Collect and record fees and fine payments for tags, veterinarian charges, impound, etc.; issue receipts.
  • Pick up cadavers from veterinarians for mass incinerations or private cremations at shelter.
  • Maintain Animal Control equipment.
  • Pick up and deliver mail, licenses and supplies as required.
  • Routinely prepare for and/or transport animals to and from spay/neuter appointments. Transport shelter animals to and from veterinary clinics or groomers for miscellaneous appointments, surgeries and emergency health care.
  • Assist with the Cat Adoption Program by transferring cats with all pertinent records to and from local pet stores.
  • Recommend new or changes to Animal Control policies and procedures for review and approval by senior staff.
  • Liaise with Public Health, Peel Regional Police or other outside agencies as required.
  • Performs additional similar and related duties as assigned.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Completion of a College Diploma program in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations, Law & Security or equivalent required.
  • Over one (1) year experience in animal control or handling and/or caring for animals in an animal care facility required.
  • Valid non-probationary Ontario Class G driver’s licence required.
  • Municipal Law Enforcement Officers Association training an asset.
  • Knowledge of the daily operational procedures for running a crematorium an asset.
  • Able to recognize and deal effectively with a diversity of animals, problems and behaviours.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
