There has been a patient list associated with this practice since at least 1920 though not always in this building. In 1998 the Department of General Practice of Kings College appointed three salaried doctors to run the practice as a 3rd wave PMS practice. Unfortunately in 2003 one of the three doctors had to retire from ill health. In April 2004 the practice became independent of King’s College with Dr Stephanie Klein and Dr David Wickstead remaining as the principal GPs in partnership together. Since then we have achieved near maximum points in the Quality and Outcomes Framework each year, won three awards for high flu vaccination coverage in Lambeth and in 2009 became the first GP practice in the country to meet the “You’re Welcome” quality criteria for making health services young people friendly. In April 2011 Dr Joao Calinas was appointed as a third partner. During the past year our list size has grown by 700 patients to 5,000 and new local housing suggests this will continue.

The surgery is situated in an end of terrace house at the Camberwell end of Coldharbour Lane close to King’s College Hospital, within the borough of Lambeth. It was improved and extended in a cost rent scheme in the 1980s and again in 2007 to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and to improve the working space for staff. We plan further changes to make it a “greener” building.

The practice is computerized using EMIS LV and is electronically linked with King’s College Hospital pathology lab. We have paper light accreditation, scanning all information onto the computer and hope to utilize IT more as all our staff are enthusiastic for this.

The patient population is a mixed one typical of many areas of a deprived inner city, but also with more affluent patients working in the local area eg King’s, local arts and crafts or commuting into London. Patients come from over 60 different countries. We have the benefit of telephone and face to face interpreting if required. We refuse no-one who lives within our practice area and are keen to provide the same quality of service to all patients. We prescribe maintenance treatment to on average 30 substance misuse patients and have an asylum seekers/homeless hostel nearby. We have a close link with

Kids Company, the well respected charity for young people, who have a centre near the surgery. Our age profile is young with many young families and no nursing homes for the elderly.

We have two part time salaried doctors but our aim is to work mainly with partners in the future. The partners and the majority of our staff all work part time to ensure a better work life balance and spread risk. The doctors have maintained 15 minute appointments for the last 10 years and chronic disease management is shared between all staff. We have developed a telephone triage service for new appointments which has been both GP and nurse led and is used when appropriate. We purposely have few dedicated clinics but standardize our care using templates and protocols. We have two part time nurses and have weekly one hour clinical team meetings together. In addition we have 12 non clinical staff who we regard as essential members of the primary health care team. We have a visiting counsellor, CBT (IAPT) therapist, podiatrist, substance misuse specialist, health visitor and district nurses. We have a small commitment to medical student teaching, have had both receptionist and nurse student placements and plan to become a training practice for GPs in the next 1-2 years. One doctor and nurse take part in the Health Education Link Service helping to teach health subjects in local primary schools.

We believe that many factors affect your health and that a holistic approach to health care is often beneficial. We believe in the importance of seeking out healthy places and activities within an individual’s environment. We want to encourage patients to find fresh locally grown food, make use of the green spaces around them and find the quiet spaces in the midst of the exciting but noisy city we live in. As part of our commitment to promoting healthier lives we aim to make the practice a green practice in the sense that we should use less, reuse, recycle where possible and look for appropriate technology.
