The coreessential units are:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development- How can factors such as lifestyle choices, relationships and life events affect your growth and development?

This unit provides you with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. you will gain an understanding of lifespan development, which is essential when working in health and social care, as you will be able to appreciate the care needs of individuals at different life stages.

●Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values- In this unit you will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector. You will apply these values in practice at Work Experience. You will develop skills that will be of use in all careers in the health and social care sector. The values described in this unit may be applied to daily life, and to a variety of careers outside the health and social care sector.WORK EXPERIENCE

Unit 5: Promoting Health and Wellbeing– This unit explores some of the reasons why health-promotion activities are carried out, and the benefits of health-promotion work both for individuals and for the health and wellbeing of the nation as a whole. You will also explore the different forms of health-promotion activities that are used by health care workers. This unit provides you with the opportunity to explore and research an area of healthrisk. You will then create materials for a health-promotion activity for a specifiedtarget group.

Unit 6: The Impact of Nutrition on Healthand Wellbeing- In this unit you will explore what is meant by a balanced diet and its effects on the body, for example in raising immunity to infection and improving concentration. You will also explore what is meant by an unbalanced diet and how this may lead to various types of ill health. In this unit, you will explore the nutritional needs of individuals at different stages of their lives. You will also learn more about the specific diets that some individuals need, for example individuals with allergies or other particular dietary needs.

Essential Work Experience throughout the year

  • Planning and leading an activity at an elderly persons care home
  • Working at a Children’s day care centre.

Assessment

  • Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development – Exam externally assessed

-This unit is assessed externally using a paper-based exam marked by Edexcel.

-The exam will be 60 minutes.

-Students will take this exam in January but if they are unsuccessful or want to gain a higher grade, they can re-sit the exam in May.

  • All other units are coursework and will be internally assessed.
  • All units will be assessed and marked with the following outcome opportunity;

-Level 1 Pass (E/D grade GCSE equivalent)

-Level 2 Pass (C grade GCSE equivalent)

-Level 2 Merit (B grade GCSE equivalent)

-Level 2 Distinction (A grade GCSE equivalent)

Progression opportunities

  • BTEC Level 1/2 Award in Health and Social Care provides a good foundation for learners for progression onto further education.
  • Achievement at Level 2 provides opportunity to progress onto Level 3 BTEC or A-Level.
  • The underpinning knowledgeand understanding, practical and vocational skills learnt will also enhance andsupport the progression to a relevant competency-based course, such as the EdexcelLevel 2/3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care.
  • Successful learners at Level 2 may alsoconsider general qualifications at Level 3, such as the GCE in Health and Social Care.
  • Learners who achieve the qualification at Level 1 may progress to Level 2 or on to acompetency-based qualification, such as the Level 2 Diploma in Health and SocialCare (QCF).
  • Alternatively, learners may also consider progression to generalqualifications such as the GCSE in Health and Social Care.
