The Clover Foundation of Santa Clara County is looking for a localYouth Exhibitor (Recipient) to raise and sell The Clover Foundation Heritage Hog at the Santa Clara County Fair. The Clover Foundation will cover expenses for the purchase of and feed for the animal. The Heritage Hog will be exhibited by the Recipient,judged as a market animal, and sold during the Junior Livestock Auction. All proceeds from the sale of the Heritage Hog will go directly to The Clover Foundation of Santa Clara County. The applicant awarded the privilege to show and sell the Heritage Hog is also allowed to sell an additional exhibitor-owned animal through the auction per Junior Auction Rules. The 2017 Fair will be held the week of July 31st – August 6th.

APPLICATION PROCESS

All applicants are required to complete the following documents and submit the completedapplication packet to the address listed below. Mailed packets must be postmarked no later than no later than the Due Date listed above.

  1. APPLICATION: The completed application form with essay attached
  2. AGREEMENT/Recipient Terms and Conditions: Upon selection, the Recipient will be required to meet certain terms and conditions as outlined in the ‘AGREEMENT’ document between The Clover Foundation and the Heritage Hog recipient. Please review this document carefully. This form must be signed by the applicant, his/her parent or guardian and his/her 4-H Leader or FFA Advisor.
  3. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION/4-H Leader orFFA Advisor: This form must be completed by a4-H Leader or FFA Advisor and returned in a sealed envelope with the Leader/Advisor’s signature across the seal and the applicant’s name printed on the front of the envelope.
  4. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION/Personal: This form must be completed by a personal reference who is not a family member, 4-H Leader, or FFA Advisor and returned in a sealed envelope with the signature of the person who completed the form across the seal and the applicant’s name printed on the front of the envelope.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Award recipient will be chosen on the basis of past record, experience, the ability to carry his or her project through to theSanta Clara County Fair, plus the essay, recommendations, and an in-person interview. Judges will rank applicants using the following guidelines:

Essay
  • Size and scope of project 60 points
  • 4-H/FFA involvement40 points
  • Grammatically correct,
easy to read, maintains interest20 points / 100 points
Outside Involvements / 30 points
Letters of recommendations (2) / 40 points
Neatness of Application / 20 points
Interview and 3 minute presentation / 110 points
Total / 300 points

JUDGING WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016. Interviews and a 3-minute presentation will be required. Applicants will be notified by phone or email if selected for the interview phase of judging.

CLOVER FOUNDATION HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP:

The individual who is awarded the privilege of raising The Clover Foundation Heritage Hog is automatically the only finalist for The Clover Foundation Heritage Scholarship of $4,000.00. To receive the scholarship the applicant must comply with all agreed upon requirements and complete the project by selling the animal at the Jr. Livestock Auction. The scholarship money will be presented to the recipient at auction.

The winner of the Clover Heritage Scholarship is not eligible for any additional Clover Foundation Scholarships.

Recipient Terms and Conditions

The Clover Foundation Heritage Hog

As Recipient of The Clover Foundation Heritage Hog Award, I agree to the following Terms and Conditions. I, ______, will to the best of my ability:

  1. Represent The Clover Foundation and be responsible for the care of the Heritage Hog.
  2. Have the hog in my possession 60 days prior to the show.
  3. Be eligible to exhibit in the Swine project at the Santa Clara County Fair.
  4. Feed and fit my animal to the best of my ability.
  5. Follow a feeding and fitting program recommended or approved by my 4-H Leader or FFA Advisor.
  6. Provide transportation for the hog from the selected breeder to my location.
  7. Transport the hog from my location to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds for the mandatory weigh-in.
  8. Exhibit this animal at the Santa Clara County Fair, abide by the Rules and Guidelines for Youth Livestock, and sell the Heritage Hog at the Junior Livestock Auction.
  9. Write Thank You Notes as needed, and provide copies to The Clover Foundation.
  10. Communicate with The Clover Foundation designated Board Member at least once per month to provide status on how the hog is progressing and any problems or concerns I might have regarding the hog or my ability to fulfill the commitments of this agreement.
  11. Be a spokesperson to promote The Clover Foundation Heritage Scholarship at appropriate events, including the Gala fundraising dinner on Saturday, April 29, 2017.
  12. Attend at least five (5) 4-H club or FFA meetings (including your own) to promote the Junior Livestock Auction, Donor gifts, and Buyers.
  13. Reach out to a minimum of 3 ‘outside’ organizations (Kiwanis, Rotary, Farm Bureau, etc.) and offer to speak on behalf of The Clover Foundation and promote the Heritage Hog program.
  14. Authorize The Clover Foundation to use images of me performing the duties of this agreement (speaking events, livestock auction) to promote the goals of The Clover Foundation.
  15. Be a member of good standing in a Santa Clara County 4-H Club or FFA Chapter during the entire term of this program, and a junior or senior-year high school student during the current school year.
  16. Provide Verification of Enrollment from an accredited college or university to The Clover Foundation.
