The Clayton CARE Club - an after school community service group for Clayton families - will have its first meeting of the year on September 25, after school in the gym. This group is a student led and directed community service club that meets about once per month to perform various service projects throughout the year. All are welcome to attend, but please note it's a family affair - not a drop off event. Grab your kids at pickup and join us in the gym!! Questions? Email Shannon Peris at .
Reflections Art Contest - Inspire a lifelong love of art in your child - Reflections Art Contest is launching Monday, 9/28!
Clayton PTA's Reflections Art Contest kicks off on Monday, September 28th. This year's theme is, "Let Your Imagination Fly" and students can submit artwork in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts (e;g;, painting, drawings, and more). Students can turn in their art and forms on any Friday 10/2 through 10/16 to the Reflections Committee in the school lobby from 7:15am - 7:45am.
New this year is an online form! In an effort to curb paper usage, we won't be sending forms home but you can access forms and rules online:
Advancing entries will go to the Austin PTA Council for a chance to win at the state and national competitions. Questions? Email Carol O'Brien,

Dudes of Cardinals (DOC) - Calling all Dudes of Cardinals (that's dads, grandads, uncles, older brothers, and other male role models) and their kiddos . . . Do you wonder what is the construction going on west of Escarpment Blvd?* Do you ever wonder what is going on in Circle C - underground? Do you have karsts or fault lines under your house?
Come to our first DOC meeting of this school year on October 2. The topic is Underground Circle C and our speaker is Dr. Nico Hauwert, a geoscientist with City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. How cool will it be to learn about the mysteries of our neighborhood and share them with your Cardinal?
School doors open at 7:15am on Oct 2. Any DOCs can bring their students to the cafeteria for an activity and some time together over a light breakfast. Students will be dismissed to class at the bell by Clayton staff and DOCs stick around a bit longer to hear the speaker and to learn together. We'll be done by 8am.
To learn more about the DOCs program at Clayton, please visit our webpage. We hope you can join us!
*That is Grassy Cove Cave, and it extends under Escarpment Blvd. It will eventually be open for guided tours.

Consider volunteering for our BOOK FAIR - We are excited to announce that "friendly monsters" will overtake the library during our Scholastic book fair for the week of October 26-30. We need lots of help to convert our library into a bookstore for the week: advertising, decorating, setup, and of course, running the fair! Please contact book fair volunteer coordinator Eva Duffin, or librarian Dana Sposeep,
19th Annual Austin Empty Bowl Project - is gearing up for the 19th annual event in November. For the last 9 years, Clayton Elementary's resident potter, Nancy Hallmark, answered a call for more bowls by offering a series of bowl making workshops to support this worthy cause. We are proud to participate in that way again.
Mrs. Hallmark will hold workshops on Monday afternoons from 3:00-4:00. Students in 3rd through 5th grades are invited to sign up with an adult to make and glaze bowls that will be donated to the Austin Empty Bowl Event on November 22, 2015. Space is limited to 20 participants per class. Students must bring an adult to work together on the project. This is a nice way to share quality time and explore an art form while helping a worthy cause.
The workshops will run on the following Mondays (9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/19 and 10/26). You must sign up in advance to participate. Click here to sign up through sign up genius. Please contact Ms. Hallmark with questions about the classes.
