The Clara B Knight Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Dade County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated to perpetuate the memory of Clara B. Knight who was a charter member.

Clara Louise Brown Knight received her early education in the public schools of Miami-DadeCounty. She attended Dunbar Elementary and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Upon graduation from high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Bethune-CookmanCollege in 1952. Additionally, she received the Master of Science Degree with a major in Guidance and Counseling from BarryUniversity in 1973.

Clara was a person who had a love for teaching and children. Her jolly spirit, coupled with firmness and care, was always in the foreground as she went about her teaching duties at DunbarElementary School. Later, when she became a counselor, this gift was even more prominent as she guided her counselees at Charles R. Drew, Poinciana, and HolmesElementary Schools.

CRITERIA FOR THE 2011 CLARA B. KNIGHT SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $1,500.00

  1. Applicant must be of African-American background and reside in Miami-Dade

County, Florida.

2. Applicant must include evidence of financial need. Examples: A copy of

parents’ 2010 income tax return or a copy of FAFSA must be attached.

  1. Applicant must include evidence of being accepted or having applied to a post secondary school.

4. Applicant must have a district grade point average of 3.0 or better and

attend a public school in Miami-DadeCounty.

  1. Applicant must provide SAT or ACT scores. Attach a copy of your original

score report. (Minimum SAT l000 or ACT 20)

  1. Applicant must attach an appropriate photograph. (Please staple and

write your name and school on the back of the photograph.

  1. Applicant must provide one letter of recommendation from either a

guidance counselor or an instructor.

  1. An official copy of your transcript with the school seal enclosed in a sealed

envelope.

  1. A typewritten statement consisting of no more than one (1) page

describing you, your goals, and your financial need. Also, include community services rendered.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: All applications must be received by March 20, 2011.

Attached is the application for the Clara B. Knight Scholarship sponsored by the Dade County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. I am seeking your assistance getting this scholarship information out to your seniors. The chapter will award one (1) scholarship for $1,500.00 to a deserving student.
