NATURE OF WORK:
This is limited to skilled work in the operation of varied heavy construction, maintenance, heavy trucks and related automotive equipment.
Work involves primary responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction, maintenance and automotive equipment used in public works and street department activities. The operation of this equipment frequently entails considerable importance attached to ability to effectively perform specialized tasks for which the equipment is designed. The work also involves manual labor tasks associated with street construction, repair and maintenance; building construction, repair and maintenance of municipal properties and general public work construction. Employees of this class may exercise limited supervision over one or more employees in carrying out specific assignments. This work is performed under general supervision, although under specific assignments workers may be closely supervised.
EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class).
Drives trucks of various types hauling personnel and materials to work sites. Hauls construction materials such as dirt, sand, crushed stone, cement and asphalt mix; operates tractor with bush hog, hauls trash, debris and other materials.
Operates bulldozer or front end loader, knuckle-boom loader used in street cleaning, backhoe, dump truck, and other related automotive equipment, tractor pulling mowing equipment and machinery, street sweeper, leaf vacuum and track loaders, regular and modified trucks containing spraying machinery and apparatus, pumping and spraying equipment, boom mowers and operates other power equipment utilized in performance of assigned tasks; services equipment utilized in performance of assigned tasks; services equipment and makes minor field repairs and adjustments.
Performs manual and skilled labor tasks associated with public works construction, repair and maintenance such as street and side-walk repair, right-of-way maintenance, municipal properties repair and maintenance, grass cutting, and other manual tasks.
Performs other related work as assigned or required.
REQUIREMENTSOF WORK:
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, adaptability’s, limitations and safety precautions applicable to the operation of assigned equipment and associated manual labor tasks.
Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinance and regulations.
Knowledge of manual labor task associated with public works construction, repair and maintenance or municipal buildings and properties.
Ability to make simple field repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
Ability to operate equipment over rough, slippery, and similar unstable surface of terrain.
Skill in the operation of assigned heavy and specialized automotive and related construction and maintenance equipment.
When initially employed in this classification, employees are required to successfully complete an apprenticeship-training period not to exceed eighteen months prior to being placed in entry-level operator status. Successful completion of apprenticeship will be at Appointing Authority’s discretion based on and determined by employee performance appraisal during this period.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Any combination of experience and training in the operation and limited maintenance of heavy and specialized automotive and related construction and maintenance equipment. Graduation from a senior high school or equivalent. *Must possess a valid Alabam State driver’s license and be insurable by the City’s insurance agency.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must complete the requirements for obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License within six months of date of employment. Cost of such license will be assumed by the City. Failure to obtain this license within specified time frame will result in immediate dismissal.
*High school diploma is desired. In absence of this diploma, this requirement may be waived by the Appointing Authority, with the approval of the Civil Service Board.
