COLORADO ASSOCIATION OF SKI TOWNS

January 2006

The City of Aspen funds the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club, a non-profit that teaches and trains young skiers. Its current enrollment is 1700 young people.

Does your town provide financial or other support to your ski club? At what level? Is there any related information on this topic that you think would be helpful to council?

Avon No

Breckenridge doesnot provide regular ongoing support but has provided periodic support through our annual grant program and provided in-kind use of Riverwalk center for their annual ski swap fund raiser and attends other fund raising events they hold with donations of auction items, probably valued annually at $8,000 -$10,000.

Fraser does not fund any such clubs.

Frisco does not provide funding for ski clubs.

Glenwood does not provide any regular support to the ski club.

Jacksonfunded the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club $4000 this fiscal year. We have funded them consistently for the past 8 years or so.

Minturn No

MountainVillage(via its HOA - MVOA) provides approximately $20K per year in support of the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club. The funding is part economic development grants made each year by MVOA. Prospective grantees must demonstrate the positive economic impact their organization and the grant funds they are requesting will have on the economy of the MountainVillage (ie, lodging, restaurant, etc.) via the competitions they propose to host for which the funds will help support.

Hope that helps.

Mt. Crested Butte did not support the local ski club for 2006. A few years ago the club did receive a financial donation of less then $1,000 from the Town. Mt.CrestedButte does support the local Nordic Ski Council. For 2006 they were given a donation of $1,400 plus they were given $3,600 to cover the cost of grooming the Nordic trail between Mt.CrestedButte and Crested Butte for the 2005-2006 winter season.

Park City Municipal does not help fund our kids ski clubs, there is a PC Ski Foundation that is very successful that fulfills this mission.

SnowmassVillage gave the AspenValley Ski/Snowboard club a grant for $8,000 in 2006. We also support the Nordic Club financially.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club funds its own operations. However, the City owns and operates a ski area (Howelsen Hill) that is primarily used by the club at a cost of $600,000 per year (which includes summer expenses). The SSWSC also installed a summer alpine slide at the City's ski area as a way to raise money for their operations. They reimburse the City for our expenses related to the slide. Decades ago, the SSWSC owned the ski area but could not afford to operate it, so they gave it to the City in return for a pledge by the City to run it.Steamboat Springs provides a huge subsidy and support to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. I believe they have nearly 1000 youth participants plus we hold numerous World Cup and NCAA, FIS events every year.

2nd answer: The Club is an integral part of our community heritage and local winter recreational core. We also will send between 12 - 18 locals to the 2006 Olympics. The Club originally owned Howelsen Hill and donated it to the City many, many years ago with numerous verbal and written agreements. Our support is as follows:

1.Provide Howelsen Hill Ski Area- Annual loss to City approx.$500,000 to $600,000 (lifts, utilities, staff, snowmaking, plowing, insurance, special events, alpine and Nordic races, etc)

2.Provide free use of Howelsen Lodge- offices, locker rooms, meeting spaces, training rooms, wax rooms, etc.

3.Provide cash contribution for grooming of facilities, jumps, etc.

4.Provide land for the Alpine Slide (owned and built by Club)withall profits going to Ski Club for it programs.

5.Just spent $3,100,000 to rebuild 68K jump with plastic andirrigation system for year-round jumping.

Telluride provides support to the Telluride Ski & Snow Board Club. In 2005 they received $4,000 and in 2006 they will receive $4,425.

Vail does not fund the Ski Club. We do give them the free use of Dobson Ice Arena for four day's and they have an annual Ski Swap which is a tremendous fund raiser. The value of this is roughly $5,000.

Winter Park does not provide that kind of support for a ski club.
