New Year’s resolutions

Three personal resolutions for 2016:

“The first two come from Jesus,”

Ridley said, “and would be a great

resolution for all of us. I resolve, in

2016, ‘to love the Lord my God with

all that I am, and my neighbor as

myself.’

“To say it just a little differently: in

2016, ‘I will love the Lord my God

with all that I am, and I will love my

neighbor – all other people – as the

precious child of God each one of

them is.’ “The other resolution is from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and is

the Golden Rule: ‘I resolve, in 2016,

in everything to do to others as I

would have them do to me.’

“Lord, you give us this New Year,

2016, a gift of time, in which we

can give ourselves to being the best

‘me’ each of us can possibly be,

and the most like Jesus each of us

can possibly be.”

Poet Douglas Ridley of

Cambridge, MD

TOGETHER, WE EXTEND A HELPING HAND TO THOSE IN CRISIS SO THEY CAN OVERCOME FORMIDABLE OBSTACLES.

Human Relations Day is January 17, 2016

Turn on the news or drive around the outskirts of your town and you will find what Jesus called “the least of these.” Those living in the margins of society, struggling to survive. People like:

·  An immigrant teenager in Texas’ poorest county, being recruited by a local gang

·  A father struggling for sobriety in Little Rock, Arkansas

·  An Oklahoma woman recently released from incarceration looking for work

Over and over Jesus served people like this, embracing them. And that’s what we want to model as the people of The United Methodist Church. To continue the ministry of Jesus we established Human Relations Day as a Special Sunday that calls all of our churches to participate in helping all God’s children to realize their potential. God’s kids say & do

the funniest things

What happened to Lot’s wife when

she looked back?”

“She was turned into a pillar of

salt,” little Sally answered.

“And what did Lot do?” the

teacher asked.

“He looked around for a fresh

wife,” Sally replied.

A Sunday school teacher asked his

class of third-graders, “What were

the final three words Jesus said on

the cross?”

A little boy waved his hand

frantically, declaring “I know! I know!”

Then, with a loud Southern accent,

he exclaimed: “Forrgivve and

forrgitt!”

The teacher later said his laughter

was so uncontrollable he had to

dismiss the class immediately.

Welcome ------

Rainbow is back after the Holiday Season!

Jokes pastors can tell

The local news station was

interviewing an 80-year-old lady

because she had just gotten married

for the fourth time. The interviewer

asked her questions about what it

felt like to be marrying again at 80,

and then about her new husband’s

occupation.

“He’s a funeral director,” she

answered.

The newsman then asked her if

she wouldn’t mind telling him a

little about her first three husbands

and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments,

needing time to reflect on all those

years. A smile came to her face and

she answered proudly, explaining

that she had first married a banker

when she was in her 20’s, then a

circus ringmaster when in her 40’s,

and a preacher when in her 60’s,

and now – in her 80’s – a funeral

director.

The interviewer looked at her,

quite astonished, and asked why

she had married four men with such

diverse careers.

“I married one for the money, two

for the show, three to get ready, and

four to go,” she replied.
