MORRELL’S MUSINGS

From Press Secretary, Neil Morrell

Saturday Scene 22nd November, 2014

F.A. Challenge Vase, 2nd Round, football accounted for six of our teams’ footballing activity over the weekend as Horley Town, Hanworth Villa, Knaphill, Chessington & Hook United, Colliers Wood United and Westfield all set off in search of further national glory. No fewer than two of these mentioned sides headed off in the direction of Sussex while Westfield entertained Tunbridge Wells (Southern Counties East League) and not forgetting the all-CCFL tie over at Hanworth Villa who welcomed Knaphill which, on paper, assured us of at least one member club safely through.

Over the years, in both the F.A. Cup and Vase, often, when the draw is made, you will have noticed, on many occasions, we, as a League, have often been paired with opposition from around the Sussex area either at home or away with the odd exception especially during the early rounds which, unlike the old F.A. Amateur Cup, cared little or not in terms of distance when the draws took place. Much has changed over the years until latter stages which makes economical sense really but still great away days can be had especially if you come home victorious.

Horley Town, Hanworth Villa and Colliers Wood United safely through to Round Three. Our six participants in Round Two were halved Saturday afternoon as Knaphill, Westfield and Division One boys Chessington & Hook United waved goodbye to further glory. HOWEVER, wins for Horley Town, 3-1 at Eastbourne United (Sussex County League), and Colliers Wood United, 2-1 at Pagham (Sussex County League), are certainly no mean achievements and they join Hanworth Villa who beat Premier Division rivals Knaphill 1-0 over at The 'Ranch'. We now eagerly await the draw for the 3rd Round which should be known around lunch-time or just before on Monday - long after these Musings go off to print.

Goals in the 8th and 20th minute set Colliers Wood United on the way to a tremendous result over at Pagham (Sussex County League) courtesy of Eli Ogunseye and then a deflected shot via Mario Embalo which, despite a gallant effort from the hosts, proved to be a bridge too far. Hampered by having their playing numbers reduced, Pagham certainly made 'Wood' work very hard for their victory, particularly controlling the second half, which was put in jeopardy going into the last quarter of play when Scott Murfin reduced the home arrears and then had a late effort disallowed for offside. Job done, though, and Colliers Wood secured their welcome progress through. Another great result secured in Sussex was the 3-1 win secured by Horley Town who provided their hosts Eastbourne United (Sussex County League) with an earlier than expected exit following last season's mammoth run that took them to the Semi-Final shattering the hopes of Hanworth Villa en route. This was not to be Eastbourne's day though. Ryan Brackpool gave the visitors a first half lead and Ash Nadesan then doubled their advantage during the second period. All-in-all, things were looking rather good for our boys. BUT THEN, five minutes into stoppage time at the end of the regulation ninety minutes, Wes Tate slotted home a penalty to offer the hosts a slim chance. It counted for nothing though as Richard Wetton moments later made it 3-1 and job done. Hanworth Villa edged past Knaphill in a scrappy encounter settled by a 54th minute Marcus Moody effort thanks to some neat Dale Marvell control and then a pass which was rewarded with the only goal of the contest. With nothing to lose, Knaphill poured forward in the closing stages and may feel aggrieved not to have had a penalty and then, in stoppage time, substitute Joel Parrish went agonizingly close. Hanworth's relief was palpable upon the final whistle. They will have to replicate the same levels of effort and desire in their quest to climb the League table though should they wish to climb out of the danger zone which is where they currently lie. Westfield, along with Chessington & Hook United, both suffered heavy defeats in their Vase games against Tunbridge Wells (Southern Counties East League) at home and Lingfield (Southern Counties East League) respectively.

Switching to League matters now, Premier Division leaders Cove now have a seven point advantage over second placed Ashford Town having played two games more. Cove, thanks to a couple of Adam Parfitt goals, one of which came via the penalty spot, plus Liam Fisher and Adam Everiss strikes secured a 4-0 win over at Hartley Wintney while Ashford Town suffered their first League defeat on the road over at Raynes Park Vale. 1-0 down after three minutes to a Paul Roberts goal, Ashford fell further behind six minutes later when Jon Key scored the first of his two goals for the afternoon. On 32 minutes, Jack Beadle pulled a goal back when he slotted home a penalty to bring them back into contention. Key then added his second and Raynes Park's third on 68 minutes to all but wrap up the points. 3rd and 4th placed Molesey and Camberley Town made the most of the Ashford slip recording wins against Epsom & Ewell and Windsor respectively on their travels. A couple of early goals from Joe Linegar and Stafforde Palmer, via the penalty spot, set Molesey up as they won 3-1 at High Road, Chipstead. Palmer added a third just before the hour mark before Kyle Hough made it 3-0 at the time in stoppage time. Camberley, with the clock running down, scored two very late goals over at Stag Meadow where hosts Windsor led from the 43rd minute. Spelthorne Sports were the Division's top scorers on the day as they ran out comfortable 6-1 home winners against Guildford City keeping them in the top six and Guildford in the bottom two. A 90th minute converted penalty from Richard Smith secured maximum points for visitors Mole Valley SCR over at Frimley Green as they won by the odd goal in five and, finally, over at Farnham Town, the hosts, 2-0 and 3-1 ahead, looked to be cruising to victory before visitors Chertsey Town, thanks to a couple late goals, came away with a point in a 3-3 final score.

Farleigh Rovers remain top of Division One where they hold a three point advantage over Worcester Park following Saturday's games. A very late stoppage time goal from Liam Neaves saw 'Rovers' edge out C.B. Hounslow United 3-2 in what looked like a good old end-to-end encounter. Second placed Worcester Park led through a 31st minute Gary Knowelden goal over at Short Lane but two early second half goals from Lee Tunnell (47 minutes) and Vinnie Hodge, nine minutes later, swung the pendulum in hosts Staines Lammas direction. Thankfully though, Declan Tueten made sure they secured a point as he equalized for the visitors eighteen minutes from time. AFC Croydon Athletic, in their second home match back at Mayfield Stadium, went down 2-1 to Ash United thanks to goals from Jacob Peace on six minutes and Joe Pantony seven minutes from time. Taylor Maddock did pull one back for the hosts a couple of minutes from time; this, however, in the end, was mere consolation. Bedfont & Feltham entertained fellow high flyers Banstead Athletic resulting in a 2-2 draw. Kark Carder-Andrews scoring both for Bedfont & Feltham and Takyi Ferdinand both for Banstead Athletic. Finally Division One wise, Paul Harkness and his new backroom team saw Sandhurst Town and visitors Alton Town put on a very entertaining encounter over at Bottom Meadow which resulted in a winning start to his new life back at the club. On target for the 'Fizzers' were Liam Burrows on the hour which Luke Perkins cancelled out twelve minutes later. However, the win for the home side was secured in stoppage time via Jeffers.

Late News: Our three sides who progressed to the 3rd Round of the F.A. Vase have all been drawn at home and so, to close, the ties involving Hanworth Villa, Horley Town and Colliers Wood United see them paired with Erith & Belvedere (Southern Counties East League), Greenwich Borough (Southern Counties East League) and Lingfield (Southern Counties East League) respectively. These ties are due to be played on 6th December.
