Saturday Scene & A Little Bit More ::: 29th - 31st August, 2014

With F.A. Challenge Cup football featuring prominently on our fixture lists over the weekend, it is mindful of this that, again, Friday night football availed itself to those with an interest of member clubs’ within. As was the case a couple of weeks back, F.A. Cup Staines Lammas got the ball rolling as they and Barton Rovers (Southern League) went head to head in a Preliminary Round tie over at The Robert Parker Stadium. Pointless so far this season in their opening Division One fixtures, slim comfort going into the game was that, in the previous round, they secured progress by dumping out Bedfont Sports who also reside and play their League football a division up within our set-up. Barton Rovers, however, were a totally different proposition though as they play their League football a couple of divisions higher in the Southern League Central Division. Sadly, on the evening, the gulf more than showed as the visitors from Barton-le-Clay racked up an 8-1 victory against our gallant lads. Played in front of a good attendance figure of 102, Lammas fell behind as early as the eleventh minute through Nat Peacock who ended up with another four to his tally for the evening along with a brace from K. Anderson and one from Dale Turner. Hopes were briefly raised on seventeen minutes when V. Hodge squared the proceedings, however, by the interval, with the score 5-1 in arrears for the home side, the damage had already been inflicted. Not content, though, to settle for this already huge advantage, the visitors added a further three goals in the second half to well and truly dump out their hosts who must now put this behind them and focus on League matters to attempt to pull themselves up the table.

" Saturday Scene "

Saturday Scene commences with news that the outstanding Extra Preliminary F.A. Challenge Cup match between hosts Hartley Wintney and Frimley Green saw the home side progress following their 2-1 victory being secured. Played in front of a good crowd of 102, first half goals from Shane Hollanby on thirty minutes and Craig Barker eleven minutes later saw Hartley Wintney take a giant step towards a potential trip to Ardley United (Hellenic League) the reward for the winners. No doubt amongst this good sized crowd came representatives via this Oxfordshire side to size up their potential opponents and, overall, were treated to a good encounter which, second period, saw the Green try to claw their way back into contention and, just maybe, secure the trip ahead of their hosts. Five minutes from time, Matt Stamp pulled a goal back to produce a grandstand finish but Hartley Wintney held on though to secure a 2-1 victory though.

And so then, over to Preliminary Round ties involving our teams commencing with our Division One boys from Bedfont & Feltham who take pride of place following their tremendous 3-2 home victory over Leighton Town (Southern League). 0-0 at half-time, Bedfont & Feltham came out second half sensing just maybe they could cause a bit of an upset and, within eighteen minutes of this second period, found themselves three clear goals to the good. First goal on 52 minutes came via a converted Jason Pinnock penalty and this was followed up eight minutes later when Luke Craig made it 2-0. Not content with that, a further three minutes passed and this time it was Jamal Helinor to make it 3-0. By now, one or two heads got a little bit lively in each camp and, within a further three minutes, the hosts had their playing numbers reduced and a penalty was awarded to the visitors following a bad challenge that the Bedfont & Feltham offender saw a red card for. The resultant penalty was converted to throw the visitors a lifeline which stretched the home side rather considerably more than possibly hoped - still over a third of the game still to play. Home nerves were further tested ten minutes from time when, again, the visitors further reduced the arrears. Thankfully, though, Bedfont & Feltham held on to record this most delightful victory over their, on paper, superior opponents and march on to the next round. Special mention to Chessington & Hook United who, like Bedfont & Feltham, ply their League activity in Division One, Saturday saw them venture over to Deal Town (Southern Counties East League) and come away with a very praiseworthy 1-1 draw following their trip and they may well fancy their chances when they meet up again over at Chalky Lane. With the winners of the all CCFL tie ensuring at least one place for our League, Knaphill and Badshot Lea served up nothing less than a close encounter which proved not quite to be. Early exchanges were fairly even as these two Premier Division sides pushed for an opening. Looking ever likely that the first half would end all square, hosts Knaphill finally made the breakthrough just two minutes before the break when Josh Watkins made it 1-0 to the 'Knappers' to the delight of the home faithful. Second half play opened up a little more as the visitors looked for a way back from this slender advantage. However, with the clock ticking away, again it was the home side who had cause to celebrate when, on 75 minutes, Dan Thorogood all but secured the victory as he made it 2-0. Going into stoppage time, though, Badshot Lea did manage to pull a goal back through Dayo Oshitola. This, merely in the end, turned out to be mere consolation; 2-1 final score at Reddings Way in this Knaphill's first season in the competition. No other victories to mention, however. Three of our other teams live to fight another day including Ashford Town who can count themselves hugely unlucky not to progress first time of asking having rattled the woodwork on numerous occasions but only scoring once in their home encounter with Daventry Town (Southern League) courtesy of Mark Bitmead; 1-1 in this encounter. Likewise score-wise, over at Hanworth Villa who took on North Greenford United (Southern League). To be fair though, 'Villa' did come back from a 1-0 deficit thanks to a 75th minute leveller. Raynes Park Vale twice came from behind following their trip over to East Grinstead Town (Isthmian League) thanks first to a Simon Moore 30th minute leveller 24 minutes after conceding and then through Alistair Wiltshire in the second period to set up a richly deserved replay. Exits on the afternoon were made by Molesey 3-1 at Cray Wanderers (Isthmian League), Westfield 2-1 at Faversham Town (Southern Counties East League), Mole Valley SCR 5-1 at home to Carshalton Athletic (Isthmian League) and, finally, Windsor 2-0 in their home encounter with Godalming Town (Southern League).

Just the four Premier Division fixtures on Saturday afternoon which saw Colliers Wood United trounce Bedfont Sports 6-1 thanks to braces from Mario Embalo and Dan Harding plus one each from Will Harding and Eli Harding; details of the Bedfont scorer not to hand at present. A stoppage time winner from Jake Baxter in stoppage time saw Cove come from behind and leap into second spot following their 2-1 win over at Camberley Town. Ryan Scott initially put the hosts one up only for, firstly, Adam Everiss to cancel out and then for J. Baxter to secure maximum points at the death. Finally, Premier Division wise, Horley Town made a triumphant trip over to Farnham Town racking up a 2-1 victory.

Division One early season pacesetters Farleigh Rovers, thanks to a brace from Martin Reeves, were too good for visitors Eversley & California. Second placed Worcester Park had a good afternoon over at Sandhurst Town where they secured a 3-1 triumph and likewise score-wise for Banstead Athletic in their home encounter with Sheerwater over at Merland Rise. Scenes of sheer jubilation over at Chalky Lane where visitors Cobham, despite falling behind, picked up a maximum points haul against Epsom Athletic following a tremendous 3-1 victory being secured. Goals from Ben Hamrogue, Mo Diakite and Anthony Nazereth gave great cause for celebration within this young, up and coming assembled side. In our remaining games, Dorking were 2-1 home winners against C.B. Hounslow United and Ash United edged out visitors Alton Town by the same score-line over at Young’s Drive.
