The charity CESSAC[1]is seeking both a Café Manager and an Assistant Managerforitscaféin the British military base (the Mount Pleasant Complex[2]) in the Falkland Islands.

CESSAC works with the military community and the Armed Forcescharity sector to provide homely, alcohol-free catering facilitiesto enhancethe welfare for Service personnel and their dependants. It operates in a number of locationsand the Mount Pleasant Complex is the most remote of these.While a few of the military personnel are posted there for about a year, the majority are deployed from elsewherefor a few monthsand are therefore not accompanied by family-members.

Theseexcellent opportunities[3]will be on a fixed term contractsfor up to a year (minimum 6 months), but potentially extendable, where you can experience an unusual life 8,000 miles away from the UK. Free accommodation[4]comes with the jobsand there is access to a company vehicle. One flightto and from the Falkland Islandswill be provided from RAF Brize Norton at no cost to the individuals.

Conditions: In order to be accepted into employment, individualsmusthave a full driving licence and, because the jobsare inside a military establishment, be able to meet standard Government baseline security checks[5]. There is access to local primary medical care, but because secondary care is not available, individuals must also pass the Government’s health assessment.

Background on the Falklands. The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean that form a self-sufficient country with a long history and unique culture.If you relish remotenessand the chance to experience a very different way of life, there will be many opportunities to view the unique scenery and walk amongst the teeming wildlife, including inquisitive penguins.

Job Opportunities:

Café Manager: To manage the café successfully in accordance with food hygiene requirements ensuring customers’ expectations of food, beverage and product availability is coupled with excellent customer service to ensure the cafe operates to its’ full potential.

The successful applicant must be self-sufficient, confident and be comfortable working and living in an isolated location.

This role will work collaboratively with the welfare team of the British Forces South Atlantic Islands and will constantly be exploring opportunities to further support the military personnel.

The Café Manager is responsible for all the key administrative tasks thatmust be completed to comply with the charity’s various policies and procedures.

A weekly car journey will be required to Stanley the capitalto collect supplies from the local supermarkets, therefore, a competent and confident driver is essential.

Hours will be 40 hours worked over 5 days a week, but flexibility is an essential element to this role due to thecafé operating 7 days per week.

Assistant Manager: To prepare and serve food and beverages, in accordance with food hygiene requirements, ensuring an excellent standard of customer service.

This role is to support the Café Manager and provide cover when required. The successful applicant will actively engage with CESSAC staff and volunteers and liaise regularly with the Chain of Command to promote volunteering opportunities at the café.

A weekly car journey will be required to Stanley the capital to collect supplies from the local supermarkets, therefore in the absence of the Manager, a competent and confident driver is essential.

Hours will be 40 hours worked over 5 days a week, but flexibility isessential due to the café operating 7 days a week.

[4]Accommodation is only available for employees, not dependants, and therefore what is normally provided is a single en-suite room alongside the military personnel in the appropriate catered-for ‘mess’. Should a couple be accepted as both Manager & Assistant Manager then it might be possible to offer separate family accommodation.
