The Braxton County Board of Education met in a regular sessionat Little Birch Elementary
onFebruary 25, 2015 at 5:00 p. m. The followingmembers were present:

The meeting was called to order by Kathy Parker at 5:06 p.m.
Kathy Parker offered a non-denominational prayer.
Little Birch Elementary Principal, Jessica Pierson shared a PowerPoint presentation from the
Little Birch Elementary Local School Improvement Council.
Van Carr moved and Dave Hooverseconded to approve the consent agenda items
(Minutes for February 11 and 12 meetings, payment of bills, budget transfers and supplements,
transportation requests and reports, and permission to attend Nicholas County Schools from
Braxton County Schools.) Vote: 4-0
Dave Hoover moved and Elizabeth Stewart seconded to approve the WAN bid from
Lumos Networks and the AT&T Mobility for cell service.
Vote: 4-0
Elizabeth Stewart moved and Van Carrseconded to approve the following
employment/reassignment – Professional:
Keith Greene – Mentor Teacher for Electrical Technology Instructor at BCHS.
Vote: 4-0
Dave Hoover moved and Elizabeth Stewart seconded the follow requests to have names
added to Substitute Teacher list:
1. Daniel Frame – effective February 26, 2015.
2. Alessandra Bonazzo – effective February 26, 2015
Vote: 4-0
Van Carr moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the following request for Leave
of Absence:
Dawn Raynor-Sears – Pre-School Special Needs Teacher Flatwoods Elementary – Effective
Retroactive February 16, 2015 to March 12, 2015.
Vote: 4-0
Dave Hoover moved and Elizabeth Stewart seconded to approve the Facilities Use Policy
at BCHS.
Vote: 4-0
Elizabeth Stewart moved and Van Carr seconded to approve fundraisers for Flatwoods
Elementary and BCMS.
Vote: 4-0
Dave Hoover moved and Van Carr seconded to approve the bid for teacher laptops for
from Dell.
Vote: 4-0
Dave Hoover moved to convene into executive session under 6-9A-4 (2)(A) to discuss
legal and personnel matters. Van Carr seconded the motion. Vote: 4-0
The board convened into executive session at 5:34 p.m.
Dave Hoover moved to reconvene into regular session. Elizabeth Stewart seconded the motion. Vote: 4-0
The board reconvened into regular session at 5:58 p.m. with no action taken.
Van Carr moved and Elizabeth seconded to approve the PRO Officer Agreement for BCHS.
Vote: 4-0
Superintendent, David Dilly gave the following positive reports from the schools:
Burnsville Elementary’s Principal, Joe Hoskins reported that they have revised the Master
Schedule to accommodate more effective instruction within the Walk to Success classes.
This was the first class of the day and has been moved to 10:05 a.m. He also reported that
some of the teachers are utilizing additional technology in the classroom. For example, Ten
Marks (emphasis is on Math). Mr. Hoskins won the BoxTops contest and will receive a pie in
the face! BoxTops raises money for their Physical Education program. There was a lot of
participation in this contest.
Joe Dooley, Principal of Flatwoods Elementary reported that the after school program
(BLAST) is working diligently on the automaticity of math facts using physical activities.
Officer Phil discussed drug abuse and school bullying. This excellent program helps children
to understand that policemen are people that help us, not hurt us.
Frametown Elementary Principal, Linda Sears reports that with all the hard work from the
regular classroom teachers along with the special education teachers, current benchmark
results indicate improvement for the majority of their special education students in reading or
math. She also reports that fifth and sixth grade students are preparing to complete a hands-
on art and mathematical activity related to the Rubik’s Cube. Several hundred Rubik’s Cubes
will be used.
Jessica Pierson, Principal of Little Birch Elementary reports that they held their first
IPI Coding session to drive high quality instruction. She also states that they worked together
as a staff to provide ratings and evidence for the School Monitoring Report that was used
in the presentation from the LSIC.
Gail Balcourt, Principal of Sutton Elementary reports that every morning they have students
lead the pledge over the PA system as the rest of the school recites it and wish students happy
birthday. She also reported that Sutton Elementary celebrated “Valenkind” week instead of
Valentine’s Day. They celebrated their peers by sharing kind words to each other and gave
the bus drivers hot cocoa on one cold morning.
Denver Drake, Principal of Braxton County Middle School reports that their attendance is
returning to normal, even on two hour delays. Mr. Drake also states that students have made
sympathy cards to give to Mrs. Gillenwater. Their kindnesses have been an inspiration.
The Assistant Principal from Braxton County High School, Sabrina Skidmore reported that
they have 7 wrestlers headed to the state tournament this week: Daniel Hoard, Dylan (Digger)
Dennison, Bryson Dennison, Levi Jarvis, KC Hoard, Caleb Whitney and Gage Vincent. She also
stated that the WV Agriculture Commissioner, Walt Helmick will be at the school on Friday
for the AG Rally Assembly that will close out FFA week at BCHS.
The Head Start Policy Council report was read.
Dave Hoover moved and Van Carr seconded to adjourn.
The meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
The next regular meeting of the Braxton County Board of Education will be held on
Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. at Braxton County Middle School.
