Modified Bell Schedule
INFORMATIONAL REPORT (continued):
Modified Bell Schedule / N/A
Principal Eric Riegert stated that despite Oxnard High School having the
second highest graduation rate in the OUHSD, we also have one of the
lowest A-G completion rates of the OUHSD; in particular with our EL
student population. Dr. Riegert explained one way to correct this imbalance
would be to implement some type of modified bell schedule. Therefore,
OHS administration and teachers have been meeting regularly,
to brainstorm/explore other bell options such as:
  • 7-period day has generated great interest.
  • Ventura High School’s current bell schedules – 0-6 or 1-7, instructional minutes are structured.
  • Ventura High School teachers teach 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Sunnyside High School, comparable school to OHS, observes a “modified” bell schedule.
  • Three choices would be available – remain the same, modified/block schedule, 7-period day.
  • May want to move 0 period ½ hour due to the number of tardies.
  • Offering a customized bell schedule would deter students from withdrawing from OHS to attend OFL.
  • Modified schedule may help to raise both the A-G rate and AYP.
  • SSC Student member Ashley Limón stated a 7-period day would be advantageous for ELAC students as many of them are working in agriculture as early as 4:00 a.m.
