PRESENTATIONS

9:31 A.M. Four Chaplain Ceremony – Tom Hauck, Amherst American Legion Post #118 – Chaplain, Jack McNaughton, Trustee & Sally Cornwell, Secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary

Jack McNaughton, Trustee, American Legion Post 118, said, “It was the evening of Feb. 3, 1943, the freighter rose and sluggish to her

pier in the dark waves slapping at her sides. The grayish New England night was full of shadows and sounds of winches, screeching cranes and the shuffling tables of weary troops. One of the black shadows hung over the stern of the freighter almost covering her name; “The Dorchester”. The vessel was old and small and only the emergency of total war had forced her transformation into a troop ship. This night in mid January of 1943, she was being loaded with troops at the Massachusetts Port and her destination was hidden in an envelope of secret orders. Soldiers 904 men in all, trapped through the companionways down into the bow of the ship. Naked light bulbs show them their quarters once hastily built into the holes, four tiers high, six-meter space per man. Among there numbers walked the four chaplains. At 0600 hours the next morning, the Dorchester casted off her lines and headed out to sea. The men grew tense with fear with the unknown moments ahead and rumors of their destination grew across the ship. Only the sky pilot knew they were headed for Greenland. At this period of World War II, allied shipping under constant attack by wolfpacks of Nazi, u-boats were being sunk as fast as they could be built. All available destroyers were sent to guard the carriers and battle waves coming to the imperial Japanese island in the far pacific and the vital conveys to the United Kingdom. For such as the lumbering Dorchester, there are only a few Coast Guard cutters, Tampa, Escanaba and Comanche for escort. Day became night, and night became day as the little convey approached Greenland. As the month of January ran out the Four Chaplains bumped, tucked and worked together comforting the sick, reassuring the troubled ones and joined in the daily signing and daily banter. They were admired by all because while they were men of god, first of all real men. Mysterious sense of dangerous was prevalent throughout the ship, and evening of the second day of the new month, one of the three escort Coast Guard cutters blinked a message across the water, “we were being followed by a submarine”. The PA system crackled with orders and the crew jumped to their guns, the Dorchester’s engine wined and later gained speed but could only push the freighter along at 10 knots. The convey stopped briefly at St. John’s, New Finland and moved on northeast wards to the strange whiteness of an Arctic night. The next morning on February 3, the ship fell soundly at 1:00 and they never sounded again. A minute later a torpedo smashed into the Dorchester, while at the water line midshift and the torpedo exploded with all its terrific furry in the engine room. First team steam lines fatally skull the engineers’ and oilers with a cool of …… The sea rushed in the hole like a tidal wave drowning 100 men. Stark panic looks across the ship, flooding out in an instant so familiar training and discipline and survival. Men cursed bitterly, while others wept as they struggled feverishly with boats and lines. Other rushed below deck in search of forgotten lifebelts, never to return.

Sally Cornwell, American Legion Post 118, Ladies Auxiliary, said, “Through this scene of terror, were a few strong men purposeful,

calm and seamlessly unafraid. Among these, were the four chaplains rushing every about the ship in the terror ridden interior and the crazily tilted deck. Giving some men the strength to live and others the courage to die. Suddenly the ship shivering and men everywhere cried out, she is going down, to be sucked under. The Chaplains sensed the threat, over the sidemen, make it fast they cried. The wind tore the words from their lips; get away from the ship before it pulls you down. Men looked at the four chaplains with new wonder seeking a sign, some symbol to carry with them in the valley of death. One man, more boy than man, made his way to the group at the rail; “Padre, I lost my jacket, I can swim..but before he could finish, one of the Chaplains took of his life jacket and put it around the boys shoulders and take this he said, I do not need it. The solider tied the jacket strings onto the rail and dropped into the sea, now almost level to the deck. The other chaplains followed without hesitation, with the full realization that there could be no surviving in the icy sea without a life jacket.

Tom Hauck, American Legion Post 118 Commander said “during the last dying moments of the freighter, the Four Chaplains with

crosses on their collars and one with the tablets of law on his, stood with arms length and devoted prayer as the vessel bow came up and slid under the ragging surface. Some are often the seeing seas for other men escape the jaws of death supported by the chaplain’s life jackets. Of the 904 men aboard the Dorchester, only 209 survived, many of the survivors owe their lives, spiritual courage, and supreme sacrifice to the Four Chaplains, who have passed on a legacy of brotherhood to all men. Aboard the Dorchester were four US Captains; Protestant, Catholic & Jew, to each in his own way answered the call to serve God and men with arms symbolically along common bond, the Four Chaplains remained praying on deck until it sank into the black waters of everlasting glory. The Four Chaplains were; Rev. George L. Fox, Methodist; Dr. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish Rabbi; Rev. Clark V. Poling, Reformed Dutch and Father John P. Washington, Catholic Priest. Greater love has no man than this that a man laid out his life for his friends.”

They thanked the Board for helping them to honor the Four Chaplains today and the month of February is set aside to tell the story in not only their Legion Group but also all branches of the military. ______(discussion was held on the above)
