Responsive Reading - Psalm 126 [BoP 662]

1When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion,

we were like men who dreamed.

2Our mouths were filled with laughter,

our tongues with songs of joy.

Then it was said among the nations,

“The LORD has done great things for them.”

3The LORD has done great things for us,

and we are filled with joy.

4Restore our fortunes, O LORD,

like streams in the Negev.

5Those who sow in tears

will reap with songs of joy.

6He who goes out weeping,

carrying seed to sow,

will return with songs of joy,

carrying sheaves with him.

Scripture Readings:

OT – Job 42:1-17

1Then Job answered the LORD, and said,2I know that thou canst do everything, andthat no thought can be withholden from thee.3Whois he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.4Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.5I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.6Wherefore I abhormyself, and repent in dust and ashes.

7And it wasso, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of methe thing that is right, as my servant Jobhath.8Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with youafter your folly, in that ye have not spoken of methe thing which is right, like my servant Job.9So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhiteand Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

10And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.11Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.12So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.13He had also seven sons and three daughters.14And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.15And in all the land were no women foundso fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.16After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.17So Job died, being old and full of days.

KJV

1Then Job replied to the LORD:

2“I know that you can do all things;

no plan of yours can be thwarted.

3You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?’

Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,

things too wonderful for me to know.

4“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;

I will question you,

and you shall answer me.’

5My ears had heard of you

but now my eyes have seen you.

6Therefore I despise myself

and repent in dust and ashes.”

7After the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.8So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.”9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s prayer.

10After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.11All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.

12The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.13And he also had seven sons and three daughters.14The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch.15Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.17And so he died, old and full of years.

Epistle – Hebrews 7:23-28

23And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:24But thisman, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.25Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.26For such an high priest became us,who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;27Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.28For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. KJV

23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

26Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.28For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Scripture Readings:

Gospel – Mark 10:46-52

46And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.47And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.48And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal,Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.49And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.50And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.51And Jesus answered and said unto him,What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.52And Jesus said unto him,Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

KJV

46Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging.47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49Jesus stopped and said,“Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.”50Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

52“Go,” said Jesus,“your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Sermon: Confession of faith; Profession of life

“When all is said and done.”

“At the end of the day”

“At the setting of the sun”

“When the die has been cast”

We come in our reading to the end of the book of Job, and it is the end of Job’s story for us, but not the end of the story altogether.

That’s the way it is in the bible. No matter what story you are reading, if it is about the life of Adam, Abraham, Jacob or Moses there is always a story that comes after, and even in the New Testament books, Jesus, the disciples, the church, the story is not over for us, even as the last words of Revelation testify saying

“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.”

There is something more coming, more implied that what we simply read. The story of Job continues on, in our lives, and the way that we learn from an example set countless centuries ago in the life of a man who was tested by suffering and in the midst of his suffering he learned to love and appreciate God even more.

(Due to a computer crash, this sermon had to be presented off-the-cuff. I hope to get back to this and finish sometime in the near future)

Mission Moments CANADA: Opening doors for employment

Located in a community with high levels of poverty, addiction and violence in Montreal, Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre offers a place of refuge and safety. Its academic, recreation and leadership programs help people address the root causes of these problems. When Shalina and Mubarak’s family restaurant closed down, Shalina turned to Tyndale St-Georges. She completed the Pre-Employability Program, where she learned French and gained job search, computer and life skills. Now, Shalina and Mubarak run a brand new corner store. They plan to give back to the community by hosting interns from Tyndale’s employment program. Through gifts to Presbyterians Sharing Tyndale St-Georges is helping people to turn their lives around.
